I just got a letter from my employer telling me that our insurance plan is called a "Cadillac" plan because it provides more than what is deemed necessary. We will now be charged a 40% tax in order to keep the same insurance when the new "better" insurance overhaul takes place. Let me assure you I have very average insurance through Kaiser. If this is better, I've got property in Florida to sell you. Who the heck is the government to deem what is medically necessary for me and my family? They need to butt out.

If you scratch the surface, the government isn't doing this to you--insurance companies are. If we had Canada's system this couldn't happen. Is Canada socialist? My students tell me no. So why would having their health care system, with which the majority of Canadians are satisfied with, "socialist"? The whole thing is ridiculous. The "reform" that we have now have some very good parts to it, but the parts that aren't good are a direct result of lobbying and pressure from the health insurance companies and the AMA. Put the blame where it belongs. If we had a single payer system this wouldn't be happening to you.

ugh. . . coming and having had worked as an RN in good old canada and having had family members die because they were put on the "list" i would have to say yes, it's socialized medicine (government suicide). . . and if it comes here God help us all. . . .

You don't give any details, so I can't comment, but at least they were ON a list and not uninsured, or kicked out of the hospital for not paying their bill, or medically bankrupt, or refused care because it was "experimental" or because of a prexisting condition. You have to look at the big picture.

I have never heard a Canadian complain about their health care, and I live near the border, so I talk to a LOT of Canadians.

Your mind is made up so that is good, I've always been an advocate about autonomy, but I was a Canadian from Winnipeg MB and I personally KNOW a lot of canadians who are not happy about the healthcare system, however, a lot of them don't know any other system except their own . . . anyhow, we are not here to discuss politics, this is a subject that we can't change anyhow . . we are here to help and support each other with their VSG. . . have a happy day!!!

I couldn't agree with you more DownInSocal. I have been blessed in many ways and having decent, though expensive, health insurance an important one. I was blessed to be born in a good (though not rich) family with opportunities that some can only dream of. And I realize that its a very difficult situation with those that can't or won't work, but what about the innocent babies/kids that do not have any control over their situations? And folks that work hard every day to put food on their tables but cannot possibly afford healthcare. You are right, we are paying now for medicaid, ER visits etc, etc. Makes so much more sense to me to make it available to all. And you might check the World Health Organization rankings of the world's healthcare systems. USA is 37th (Canada is 30th, and all the other Western Countries beat us out too). Most expensive doesn't equal the best.

Nothing is free and if it sounds to good to be true, then it usually is. In my opinion we will pay taxes out the ying yang and we will probably also end up paying for a majority of ILLEGAL immigrants. And forget about surgeries such as vertical sleeve, we will have to pay every dime of these surgeries ourselves. Im afraid the system would think its cheaper to let us die from our obeseity than pay for our surgeries. That's just my QUICK thoughts.

I am so totally behind your statements! "NOTHING IS FREE" The white elephant theory is so correct. . . and yes, we will pay out of our A$$ for the health care (should it even happen) . . . and yes the system would think it's cheaper to let us die . . . that is why it's called "government assisted suicide". . . i had 2 aunts in Canada who had cancer, they were put on a waiting list for care. . . guess what? it was cheaper just to let them die. . . and die they did. . . same with my uncle, my cousins, and grandma. . . government assisted suicide. . . can you imagine a government running healthcare? Our healthcare system is not perfect, but it's significantly better than healthcare in the US, which is a certifiable nightmare (I lived in the US for 5 years, so lots of first-hand experience there). Healthcare in the US is third world. If you live in the third world and are rich, you can afford to get great healthcare (just like in the States!) - all you do is go to a private hospital or book a flight to another country. But for most people, it's subpar. Yes, there are waitlists here, but like you mentioned, at least you stand some sort of chance of getting your procedure done if you are broke - in the States, no dice. American healthcare is only great for the uber-rich and for insurance companies.

Agree that if you are fortunate enough to have plenty of money or good insurance, you can get anything you want/need in the US. Unfortunately, there are many many people that don't fit in that category.
