Food Intolerances

Recommended Posts

WLS has really made my wheat and milk intolerances more pronounced and painful. I'm finding it hard dealing with the emotions. It's like greiving. Will I ever stop?

I have become lactose intolerant since getting my sleeve. I was a major milk drinker, so it was really difficult for me. I really craved milk and things like ice cream, etc. But now, at five months out, it really doesn't bother me neither as much anymore. I got used to not being able to have those things, and no longer crave them near as much. Once in a while, the ice cream bug does hit, but I know I am better off without it.

Hello-----:drool5:

We are back from the cruise and wow what a great time!

Anyway....I have never been intolerant of milk or ice cream or hot food...NOW I have some problems with all that. I hope as time gets under my belt...I hope that it goes away.

I will say this that I tried again some hot food Sunday and had no issues, I have noticed that I must take my antacid or I do have problems.

Have a good day all:thumbup1:

A lot of WLS people get food intolerances early out, but over time they lessen or go away. The theory is that surgery irritates your tummy and makes it more sensitive.

That said, I feel like my lactose intolerance is getting worse, not better. I guess we'll see what happens long term.

Blessed be, no lactose intolerance so far. My only food intolerances come from two things: when I eat too fast and when the food has undigestable parts (i.e. the skins on beans). Have also had troubles with real eggs, but substitutes are ok. Beans and their skin also gave me the slimes. But overall, it is simply the need to slow down.

re: the emotions,

are you grieving the loss of your favs like bread sweets etc? Or just grieving your old eating life in general?

I worry about that too, but I did order the book the Beck Diet Solution that MacMadame (I believe) recommended for the emotional recovery afterwards.

I am hoping it will be helpful. Perhaps your library carries it?

Mine won't get to me until the week after my surgery (from Amazon) and that when I will need it the most I am thinking.

How are you doing lately?

All the best

I recommended the Beck Diet Solution. I have heard the work book is more helpful than the book, but I didn't know there was a work book when I ordered the book.

I believe the book Mac recommended was something like food and Feelings?

Sorry about that, the memory isn't quite as good as it used to be!:party4:

I was lactose intolerant before surgery and the surgery made it worse. Used to be I could eat ice cream and pay for it later that day - now, however, if I eat it, I throw it up within 10 minutes, if that - has left me with NO desire whatsoever to eat it anymore. Frozen yogurt stays down; however gives me terrible gas. Thankfully I'm still able to eat cheese -- haven't tried regular yogurt yet - may give that a try tomorrow.

I don't have too much trouble with other things thankfully.

I am doing better. I was low on potassium and zinc. The intolerances make food choices so limited. I miss eating fruits and vegetables.

When was your surgery and why can't you eat fruit and veggies (unless you're early in your post-op)?

I drink a lot of fat free lactaid milk and at my age I need the calcium...after the sleeve, it will be even more important. Since I started taking a probiotic I can even tolerate cheese and cream Soups. Lactaid tablets also help. Although I take a Calcium supplement, it seems to me that getting it from foods is even better.

It will be interesting to find out if you're still able to drink even lactaid milk after surgery.

I can drink much milk even with lactaid tablets. I can drink a few sips, but anymore than that, I get horrible gas and diarrhea.

I can eat cheese and yogurt.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
