Needing some help

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on Friday morning and was released Saturday afternoon.

Saturday was a miserable day - I could not tolerate anything. I took tiny sips of everything I tried - tea, Water, warm water, cold tea, ice chips, etc.

I have been lurking on forums so I know to take tiny sips and slow - slow slow but it isn't working for me. I finally managed to get half a cherry popsicle down and in a half hour - up it came. I am trying to stay hydrated but what is going on? I am walking - trying to do every single thing correctly. I am on 10 mg of Reglan ever six hours and one Prevacid daily. For pain, I was given hydrocodone/apap (generic for Lortab) 10 - 20 mils by mouth every 6 hours.

The pain medicine makes me gag it tastes so nasty and I have quit taking it today. I haven't thrown up yet but still cannot seem to get hardly more than a teaspoon of water or tea down in ten minutes. Today even the popsicles are nasty. And - on top of it all - I have so much spit in my mouth I am carrying a pan around. What is going on?

Have you talked to your doctor? I know I had a hard time drinking anything after surgery, too, and it turned out my esophogus was spasming with every drink I took; it sucked. It's been 3 months now and it has gotten easier to work around. Knowing what was causing it helped, too. I would contact your doctor, nurse, nutritionist, whoever and talk to them about it. You definitely don't want to get dehydrated and end up back in the hospital on IVs. Keep us posted okay?

It sounds like the symptoms of a stricture. Definitely call your doctor so they can get you in to see what's up.

Hi,

Well, posting seems to have cured me. LOL! Actually last night as I was laying in bed (we are in a motel in Somerset), i tried drinking some Aquafina Water that was basically frozen and thawed a little. I got down almost 3 ounces in about 45 minutes which was more than I had gotten down since

I got out of the hospital.

My husband was leaving today but insisted we go to see Dr. H and make sure everything was going okay. Dr. H checked me over and seemed to think I this was pretty normal this early out and suggested I try warm Water which he said sits better with some people. Well, it doesn't with me but anyway I told him that I had drank the Aquafina water and it stayed down. I also got up in the middle of the night to walk - walk - walk - and sipped a bit more.

Today, I even had three teaspoons of cream of chicken Soup and kept it down and have been sipping water all day. I have practically finished one 24 ounce bottle already and I know I will be done before midnight - and a bit more.

He wants me to stay for a follow up on the 21st (my 62nd birthday) so my hubbie is coming back up this Saturday. My daughter is driving up now so we can spend some "fun" time together.

I am feeling a million times better and Dr. H thinks my incision is healing quite nicely.

I cannot tell you how much better it made me feel to read everyone's comments because I was feeling pretty low. Thanks to everyone who replied.

I have been walking - walking - walking and even walked over to Walmart

today after my husband left. I am still feeling good - just a little tired.

I was reading about people having dreams about food and have to add that I have had a nightly dream regarding eating - however, in all dreams - I am choking after I tried a cracker and then the next dream - a bit of turkey.

(I had talked to my daughter and she said she was cooking a turkery for dinner). I guess I am a bit nervous to even think about eating - much less getting over the pain of drinking.

Thanks - again. Still - having some spitting but not nearly as much as yesterday - thank goodness. :drool5:

The excess mucus will go away with time -- if it's too bad, try some liquid benadryl for a couple days -- it really helped me my first week following surgery. Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
