Problem with eating-HELP!

Recommended Posts

I need some advice. I am almost 2 months post-op and am eating a regular diet now. Whatever I eat seems to settle right in the base of my throat. I only eat a little and it feels like the food is right at the bottom of my throat. If I eat a little too much, same thing. After around 30 minutes it passes, but it's really uncomfortable. Whats up? I'm taking the prilosec every day.

I'm only 5 weeks out, so I don't really have experience with this. Do you think maybe your stomach is not yet able to handle non-pureed/soft foods? It sounds a little like the feeling I have if I eat too big of a bite, don't chew enough, eat too fast, or get too full. Sorry I don't really have any advice...I just want to say I hope it gets better soon.

hi

i am with dee dee here. i am only 3 weeks post op. all i can suggest is maybe smaller bites and chew chew chew. when you think you have chewed enough chew a couple more times. my sister is 3 years post op for gastric bypass and she still needs to take care with the size of her bites and how much she chews. its just a new learning curve for us all i guess. i used to inhale my food so this is a huge thing for me to chew until my food is basically Water in my mouth.

sorry couldnt offer anything else.

hope someone has a solution. i will keep watching.

My surgeon told me that happens when you eat more than the stomach can hold or eat too fast. The food is backing up into the esophagus.

Boy, Mac, if thats whats happening then my stomach can only hold a tiny, tiny bit, cause it seems to happen no matter how much I eat. I do have to watch how fast I eat. Maybe thats the problem. Thanks for the advice!

I have the same trouble. Anything with a little density just doesn't seem to like going down. It only takes a few bites to be 'full' and feel as though it will back up. I'll try chewing even more.

I'm going to guess it's a speed issue. I know that I was eating much too fast at first even though I thought I was slowing down.

The good news is that I have slowed down a lot in the past 10 months!

Mac,

I think you are right. This past week I really concentrated on slowing down my eating. I had many fewer problems, although I did have a few. Thanks for your advice. I will continue to eat SLOWLY!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
