How much help do you need when you get home?

Recommended Posts

I have surgery planned for Sept 21 and my DH found out today he has to be out of town on the day I come home from the hospital. I will get a girlfriend to bring me home. How much help do you need when you get home? Can you stay by yourself? What do you need help doing?

Thanks for you help

My doctor said someone should be with me a day or two after I get home...

See if your girlfriend can stay with you. I wouldn't suggest being alone because you may be dizzy from the initial change in your diet and abillity to take in liquids.

It also depends on how complicated surgery got. Some people have different experiences; however, most have someone with them post op for the first couple of days until you can get your feet on the ground...

You will need the physical support and probably some emotional support...remember, this is major surgery.:001_cool:

I was fine at home alone - I was driving the next day - I am sure you will be fine if you can't get someone to stay with you. The only thing you'd really need help for is to life anything over 15 lbs. and if you're by yourself, then just don't lift anything. Also, I suppose it would depend on how long you are in the hospital after surgery -- I was there 3 days and felt fine when I was discharged - never had any dizziness at all from the get go.

I was in the hospital for 3 days as well. I felt fine by myself. I live alone and nobody came here to help me. I went right back to work.

I was in the hospital overnight and I needed someone to get me home, but once I was home, I didn't really *need* anyone. But it was nice to have someone.

Once I got home, I probably could have done just fine if I was by myself as well. But, I had my mom, my hubby, my kids all waiting on me hand and foot. Actually, it might have been better to have been alone, I could have gotten more rest!

I was in the hospital 3 days and would have been fine home alone. In fact like Susan said it would have been better maybe the first day to be alone. DH bugged me all day because he missed me while I was gone and wanted to talk and play x box. I just wanted to take little walks and nap. I drove for the first time yesterday but that was just because I didn't need to until then. I could have driven 5 days out.

Hubby just called and said the meeting has been changed to Oct. So he WILL be able to bring me home from the hospital. I feel better with that

Thanks for all the advice- y'all are great!

I was in the hospital for three days and was totally self-sufficient when I got home. I was alone. As posted above, do not lift over 15 pounds and I wouldn't reach far above my head.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
