Question about Bowel Prep

Recommended Posts

I had to do a prep and was not hungry after the prep at all. I drank some apple juice and Water and that was it. My paper said I could continue Clear Liquids the whole day of the prep and then nothing after midnight (the night of surgery).

I stayed away from Jello just in case. No red or blue but I didn't want a green scar or something crazy . Just kidding, maybe. I am overly cautious person.

I had to do bowl prep 48 hrs before surgery I was only allowed clear liquids up until midnight the night before. I didn't feel too hungry while on the clear liquids but I did find that Jello was pretty filling for me.

I don't remember anything in my paperwork about doing a bowel prep. I'll be vacationing in the Long Beach area for four days prior to my surgery day. If I have to do bowel prep it's going to seriously affect my plans for those four days!...

I'm having revision surgery from Band to VSG. Does EVERYONE have to have bowel prep?

I did not have to do a bowel prep at all. I have no idea why anyone would need to for a sleeve.

Dr Aceves did not recommend any bowel prep. But I tried to really limit myself to clear liquids for two days before surgery, just so my bowel would not be full of stuff that would cause more gas. I had very little gas post op.

What the hell is a bowel prep? Like a laxative?

They do want your bowels to be fairly empty Tara, so Dr Almanza usually has us do at leat 3 days of liquids and to take a laxative 3 days pre surgery date (but just once), and of course nothing to eat or drink after midnight before surgery.

Those were my instructions anyway, you can always ask Shirley if there are any different ones for you though, not sure if it depends on your BMI or not. Probably not, but I am not sure.

Hope that helps,

Donna :)

I was just about to start a thread about this very thing. Dr Almanza's instruction say "take a laxative the 3 days before your surgery. You may use any laxative of your choice. Please take only clear liquids after taking your laxative. This will help to reduce post operative gas and bloating."

So this leaves me unsure. Does it mean take a laxative every day for 3 days before or just one 3 days before? Also does the clear liquids mean I can't have anything except clear liquids for 3 days before my surgery? I'll starve to death. At least the protien shakes i've been drinking make me feel pretty full but they are far from clear. I'm also worried about taking a laxative 3 days in a row and then being on a plane for 8 hrs.

Any of Dr. Almanza's patients know the answer? I tried to email Sandy but she's out of the office until the 24th and my surgery is on the 19th.

Has anyone heard from Heftynetty? She has just disappeared from the boards. Last activity was 9/23.

Bill

No we haven't and we're quite concerned as last post she was still in the hospital with complications and no one has heard anything since. It's very concerning.:)

I did a google search on her screen name and found three different boards with the same name registered. One involved low carb dieting, one was for lapband, and another talking about switching from band to VSG. I am assuming they were all her. She only posted once or twice on those boards. I know she wasn't doing well, but maybe she is one of those types who just loses interest in forums. I hate it when people do that as it leaves a lot of unanswered questions and concerns.

I sent her an email, maybe she will respond.

Bill

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
