Starting to walk-but with questions....

Recommended Posts

I started walking on Sunday... decided it was time to add some cardio

(plus the weight loss has slowed and I need to get it moving again)

Anyway- it was BEAUTIFUL here- and wanted to get out of the house- so I dusted off my sneakys and off I went.

when I got done I got in the car and drove what i walked to see how far I went... it ended up being EXACTLY 2 miles. And it took me 40 minutes.

I didn't walk too fast and I didn't walk too slow, but enough to work up a little sweat. Did it in the same amout of time yesterday.

My question is... am I doing it right?? LOL

Is it too long a time to walk that distance?

I was a bit worried about my knee, but it was fine!! I actually felt great afterwards!! And very surprised that I could even walk that distance.

Trying to make this a daily habit... takes 30 days to create a habit, and just 3 days to break it!

( so they say:001_tongue:)

2 miles in 40 min. sound about right. That's 3 miles per hour and a lot of people start at 2 or 2.5 mph so you are already ahead of that.

I think that's great that you went walking by yourself. I go to the gym by myself, but I can't bring myself to go for a walk unless I have a friend with me.

Just try to walk as fast as you can without being uncomfortable. If you are breaking a sweat, you're doing great!

With walking (and runnning for that matter) the time isnt so important as the effort you're putting in. If you're getting out of breath and raising a sweat, then the intensity is right to increase your fitness, even if you only covered 1 mile inthat time!

when its easy and you start getting faster, its time to push a bit harder.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
