Well last night was my first time going out to dinner...my wonderful husband hasn't been out to eat in a loooong time and wanted sushi. I had a couple sips of Soup, about 5 bites of salad (should have probably stopped here) and then 3 bites of sushi (protien only). As we were walking out and by the car...well...let's say it was easily coughed up. LESSON LEARNED.

Also coming to the realization of what role food played in me dealing with stress...makes me kind of sad because things are "stressful" at work, new diet, economy at home etc....and I can't eat. Please pray for me....it's hard. LIfe's kick'in my butt right now...LOL...and I can't eat my way through it.

Question: is anyone having th sensation that when you swallow, it feels like something is "stuck" and that what ever you are swallowing passes by...it's hard to explain, it's like I have something stuck down near my sternum that is like a flap that when I drink or eat, I can feel it pass...

Most definitely - I have had it since surgery and still have it now whenever I eat -- I can feel everything going down - food, liquid, pills - you name it, I feel it - and yes, I get that "stuck" feeling and have to wait for whatever it is that is "stuck" to move down before taking another bite. If I take a sip of anything while having that feeling, whatever is there comes right back up. Not sure how long that feeling will last - I though it was from my spasming esophogus; however, I'm not sure anymore. I have to admit it's a very odd and at time uncomfortable feeling.

I am so glad to hear I am not the only one who experiences it that. And, it is usually within the first one or two bites of food that I take. That is strange.

The advice my doc's staff gave for "stuck" feeling...if you really feel like something is stuck...walking around with arms in the air, and taking a teaspoon of olive oil to help lubricate.

Maybe that will help someone out there.

I'll definitely try it and suggest it to Bearded too!

I get the stuck feeling to. I was thinking that I get it when I eat too big of bites or maybe when I eat too fast.

I also get another pain in my chest, right where I get the stuck feeling, but its not the "stuck" pain. Its more of a discomforting feeling than actual pain. Sometimes it feels like my heart is beating fast. I think it might be gas, but am not sure. The only thing I can do is lay down and wait for it to pass. It has been waking me up at night the last couple nights. Does anyone else experience this?

I get that feeling like my heart isn't beating right if I eat something with too much fat or too much sugar.

They say we don't have that dumping syndrome that people who have had RNY/gastric bypass, but I definitely feel very strange if I eat something high in fat and sugar.

I have that too - thank God not nearly as often as up to 2 weeks ago - I get hot and clamy, lightheaded, etc. and I have to lay down - it totally drains all the energy out of my body -- I think, although I am not a doctor, that when you are stuck, you become anxious from the pain and that causes your adrenaline to kick in and thus the rapid heartbeat, etc. I know Bearded has the same reaction. Thank goodness we're both finally learning to take smaller bites, chew more and stop before we get to the stuck feeling.

BTW Rosey - still waiting to see the pics of your new "do'... how are you doing on your journey? Can you believe you're almost 2 months out?

I know all the surgeon's have their own "rules" and thoughts on things, but just a thought here~~ my husband's "rules" do not allow salad for several months. I think because it is considered difficult to digest.

Also, they recommend a little pineapple juice if things feel "stuck." One caveat, though, pineapple juice is not allowed at first. I'm not sure when it is allowed in...but just a possible tip for those of you who are further out... Thanks White Rice for the olive oil tip too. I will mention it to my husband. So far, "stuck" feeling isn't something he has had to deal with. There have been a couple of times when he felt mild nausea when he thought he overate perhaps and also when something seemed too "rich" for him.

Also, Oregon Daisy, my husband was told that VSG does NOT usually cause "dumping" syndrome like RNY, but that it does happen sometimes with some.

Also, Caro, yes, praying for you since you asked!

I guess I am really lucky that I never get that stuck feeling. I've been able to drink as much as I want from day one, with no discomfort. I just have to be careful to stop before I feel full because if I feel full at the table, I will feel miserable 15-20 min later.

Usually that's because your vagus nerve got overstimulated.

My surgeon says most people can tolerate it around 2-3 months out. But we're allowed to try anything because everyone's different.

Papaya enzymes and meat tenderizer also work. Can't say I'm enthusiastic about downing raw meat tenderizer so I haven't tried that, but I have a bottle of papaya enzyme pills I got at GNC and I do use them occasionally. I carry some in my purse along with my other pills.< /p>

How about a papaya shake, with yogurt and papaya and ff milk blended into a liquid? Years ago my surgeon recommended this after a surgery (not WLS), to promote healing. It worked for me.

They sell those papaya tablets at Walmart

they are pretty tasty too, but I haven't had

to use them since I had my band taken out.

Thanks everyone. I learn something new on here all the time. I will add the papaya pills to my shopping list. I plan to be prepared for everything. LOL, I should be though, because of the wait I've had to do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
