Can I get the band?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am very interested in the band but I am afraid I might not "qualify." I am one of those people who are really really small boned/petite framed. So I can be quite overweight for my frame and still not look it or fit the typical numbers for overweight. My normal weight (before kids) was under 120 and I wore a size 4 AND I was not super skinny looking, I still had some meat on, lol. I am 5'5.

Now, according to the BMI calculators I am "obese" (yeah, no news to me) but my BMI index is 31.5. I have gained over 70 pounds in the last 2.5 years, going from a size 4 to an 18.

Since my BMI is under 35, any way I could still be a candidate?

Any input would be appreciated. It was hard for me to get up the nerve to ask.

Sincerely,

Y

The fast answer is "no" but the right answer depends on other factors such as co-morbidities (diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, heart problems, etc.).

Insurance companies have a "general" guideline that you need to have a BMI of 40 with no co-morbidities or a BMI of 35 WITH co-morbidities to qualify for weight loss surgery in the United States. If you elect to self-pay (either in the U.S. or another country), the insurance constraints don't apply and you can find a surgeon to operate on you.

You may be eligible for LapBand Surgery if:

* BMI of 40 or greater or 35-39 with significant co-morbid conditions

such as: Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, sleep Apnea/Asthma

gastroesophageal reflux/heartburn, High cholesterol, osteoarthritis,

low back pain, heart disease, hip and leg problems.

That is what is listed on a pamphlet that I received in the mail....but it would never hurt to ask your doc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
