I'm scheduled for 09/09/09 and can't wait! I'm getting a little sad that I won't be able to have a 'regular' meal with my husband anymore - eating together is a big deal for him. I feel like I will eat my meal in 15 seconds or less!

Howdy from Colorado! I am scheduled in Denver for 9/24/09 with Dr. Metz. I am nervous and excited all at the same time. I just hope and pray I am making the right decision for myself so I can continue to lead a happy, healthy productive life! I can't stand the thought of altering my tummy but I can't make headway any other way. So, we'll all be in this together! Rebekah

I think it actually takes 30 minutes for us to eat a meal. You have to chew...and chew... and chew some more. And then rest.....lol

Actually, I find that if I take about 45 minutes to eat then I stay fuller much longer ... so it may be your hubby is done before you.

See, I am the opposite. If I take too long to eat, then I end up eating a lot more because some of it has started digesting and I have more room. I am usually done eating in about ten to fifteen minutes.

Two nights ago I actually took the time and forced myself to spread it out over approx. 45 minutes - I was able to get down a small piece of meatloaf and 2 slices of homegrown tomatoes ... it was the first time since moving to mushies/food that I actually felt full and stayed full and didn't eat the rest of the evening. Generally I eat, get full fast and am hungry again in an hour. I did the same thing at lunch yesterday and got the same results.

I guess everyone is different in this regard.

My surgeon recommends we take 45 min. I used to do 10-15 and now I'm up to 20-30, which I see as a big improvement. I don't think I'll ever do 45 on a regular basis but I wouldn't mind doing 30-45.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
