Protein, Calories and Carbs.

Recommended Posts

I am worried I may eat too much. I can eat more than I should and do not feel full. I have been keeping track of my Protein, Calories and Carbs. I am doing well but do not really know how many carbs or calories we should limit it too. I am almost 2 week Post OP.

Even in my 7 month I continue to weigh my food...2 oz or 1/4 cup. I do not count calories or carbs at this point. Actually I eat very liitle carbs. Protien, protien, protien. You should not eat until you feel full...it you do you will overeat.

I am 3 1/2 months out and I still weigh my Protein. I can only do 2 oz of hard Protein and then I can have maybe 1/4-1/2 cup of veggies. I am full at that point.

I drink a Protein shake, 30 gm pro and 140 cal, about 10 am and then I have 2 meals. I also have 1.5 oz Jerky pack, 14 gm pro and 120 or 140 cal and 12-14 carbs, from costco mid afternoon. I have low blood sugar and sometimes I bottom out due to lack of protein from so little food.

I stay around 600-700 calories a day and 60-70 gm protein and 80-90 oz fluids. carol

Thank you so much for replying this really helps. Yes I have been trying to eat too much. I am guessing at 3 1/2 months out that you are not mushing anything now just 1/4 Protein and or vegies twice daily along with your Protein Shake and Jerky. I have not really recieved information about the amounts Just what to eat. Yesterday I had colby cheese then realized it is not like string cheese as far as calories so I had to amost eat nothing the rest of the day because I did that. Do you know of a site to go to for more information on eating? THank you so much for you reply.

Soy slender soy milk has 3 grams of carbs.

I don't drink milk.

I eat Protein such as eggs, tuna, chicken salad, meat and cheese. I drink a Protein Drink made with Water that has 2 grams of carbs.

A lot of people use fit day or the dailyplate to calculate their protein carbs and calories.

Oh...ok. I drink the light soy and the label says it has 10. Then again, I am still full liquids and was told to use it. Maybe the carb situation is not a priority for me yet. Jumping the gun a bit!

I'm just now getting to the point of counting calories and carbs since surgery, mainly because I haven't been able to eat all that much and I was concerned with it -- now that my spasming seems to be improving (it's a day-to-day thing), I'm able to eat a little more so I am going to start tracking my intake.

If I were you, since you're so new out of surgery, I personally wouldn't worry about it just yet - I'd focus on getting in your Protein and your fluids. That's just my opinion, however.

How in the heck do you stay under 30 grams of carbs per day? One glass of soy milk has 10; fat free milk has 13. Even sugar free yogurt has over 10 for a potion size. Aren't there good and not such good carbs?

I use Greek Yogurt -- it has 5 g of carbs. I don't drink milk (it gives me a stomach ache) or soy milk.

When I was just out of surgery, I drank a lot of Protein drinks with hardly any carbs and most of my softs had few carbs. I averaged about 25 g a day. But, over time, as I added in more choices, it went up. I was up to about 45 g a day and 900 calories by 7-8 months pre-op.

Once I went to 1200 calories a day and more, the carbs varied so wildly that it's not worth tracking them. :biggrin2: I now just worry about Protein and calories and let the carbs and fat take care of themselves.

So the thing to do is to track Protein and calories. Don't worry about carbs and fat. Well that will much easier than what I am trying to do. And you lost just fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
