Had Sleeve Gastrectomy in Belgium

Recommended Posts

Hello: I had Sleeve Gastrectomy in Ghent, Belgium because it was not covered by my insurance here in Florida. It cost me one quarter what it would have cost here in the United States. I had my surgery on April 30th and came back home a week later. I run everyday. I am up to 21 minutes non stop now. I have gone from 335 lbs on the day of my surgery to 274 lbs as of this morning. I am 6'3" and my goal is 200 lbs. I am not lifting any weight right now, as I want to concentrate on losing weight.

I sometimes have this sharp pain along the length of my stomach. I knead my stomach a bit, then I feel better. I also notice heartburn. I take a proton pump inhibitor for relief. I was diabetic before my procedure, but I have not had to take any medication since I had my surgery. My blood glucose level has been in the normal range and I will be having A1c test done on Monday the 10th of this month. I look forward to hearing from fellows and to share experiences.

thank you.

Henry.

Hello all. Thank you for your kind responses. I am in Margate, which is about 7 miles north of Fort Lauderdale. I have to say that I was very afraid to undergo such a major operation, but I have three girls to live for. I want to be around to guide them through life. I am very glad I went through with the procedure. I am in pharmacy school and I have knowledge of the side effects of drugs. We were taught that diabetes was a chronic condition that could only be maintained by drugs. I look forward to showing my A1c results to my lecturers once I have it done on Monday. Nobody at school ever mentioned the remission of diabetes that is achieved by bariatric surgery. I plan to spread the word.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
