how do you keep your vitamins down?

Recommended Posts

I totally barfed tonight for the first time since my surgery. It's the Multivitamin. The problem is you are supposed to take them with a meal, but if you can't DRINK with a meal, then how do you do that???

I'm still not eating enough, got a sinus thing going on, going back to work this week, and just feeling a little miserable. Not to mention this one incision of mine is totally OPEN and not healing. "whine"

I had to take mine with yogurt or applesauce and had to cut them into small pieces in order to be able to do so.

Sorry you're having problems with your incision - you might want to get that checked out if it doesn't close up soon.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to need to try something different with the Vitamins.

I called my Dr about the incision last week because it was ooozing some pretty nasty stuff, and they told me to wash it with antibacterial soap and treat it with neosporin under a bandage. It looks awful, but the skin around it isn't too red or anything. I have a follow up appt next week, so hopefully if it's not better by then, the Dr will be able to do something for it.

I take mine at bed time.....with milk. I had to do this cause I am still taking prenatal....breast feeding and the extra Iron......

I sometimes eat a cracker or something little after......but they usually make me nausious.

Get used to them if you get pregnant....they only get worse! (they do have a chewable prenatal. I just swallow mine!

I am taking 2 children's chewable with Iron everyday. Once this bottle is gone, I'll be switching back to the GNC chewables. I haven't had a problem with the taste of either of these.

I'm really sorry you are having trouble with Vitamins. I think Vegas has the solution of mixing them in something that is easy to get down.

I take mine first, then drink a Protein drink after. If I have something different for Breakfast, I take my Vitamin then have Breakfast.

I got some liquid Vitamins at costco that I took for awhile too.

I use Water. The whole drinking with your meals thing is a guideline, not a law. There are really good reasons not to drink with your meal, but there are good reasons to take Vitamins with food (they work better). So I use as little water as possible and I take them right before I eat. That's my compromise between the "don't drink with your meals" principle and the "take your vitamins with food" principle.

That's what I have been doing too! Glad I'm not the only one. I think my problem with the night I got sick was because I took the vitamins after I ate, not before. Last night I took them before my meal and I was fine.

Thanks all!

I'm eating pureed chili for Breakfast. This is my first day back to work (even though I've been working setting up my classroom since last week), so wish me luck!

Brandi, welcome to the forums. I didn't know costco had adult Gummy Vitamins, I may have to check that out.

Ash, good luck today!

I was thinking the exact same thing - on both counts - so I second your thoughts to both Brandi and Ash.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
