I feel kinda silly posting this but here goes- did the EGD( upper endoscopy) bother anyone. I am a nurse and have been with pts during EGDs but hello I wasn't the patient!!! As long as I have drugs I think I will be okay but I am not excited about that tube going down my throat!!

My husband had this done and he had twilight anesth for it. Did you ask if you will be out for it? Make them give you something! I am thinking a double dose of Valium, Xanax, or Ativan will fix you right up.

I will be doing a barium swallow with a follow up x-ray, not the EGD...thank goodness. My throat will be sore enough with three tubes going down there during the surgery. When I had a EGD test a year ago they completely knocked me out. Gawd, I am such a wimp...

I didn't like the idea either, but generally, you will not usually be conscious for it. I had a cold at the time, but even so my throat was not even sore or scratchy. It was nowhere near as bad as I expected. I didn't like having a tube put down my throat.

I had one years ago and I was put under for it -- the only after effect I had was the next morning when I drank orange juice and I could feel every spot from which they took biopsies - since you won't be having that done, you probably won't have any problems at all.

One is a nasal gastric to suck stuff out. Then there is the anesthetist/respiratory tubing. Add to that the French Bougie (size 34) going down there. So three. Then five abdominal portals for the surgery. Plus a Foley catheter (oh, fun, fun!). The nasal will stay in until the next morning to pull out any acid and ick that may form. I asked a lot of questions of my surgeon. Can you tell? :)

Not everyone uses a foley catheter though.

They will be doing biopsies -- to check for H Pylori bacteria

Well, in that case, I strongly suggest you avoid drinking anything acidic for about 1 week ... unless of course you want to know all of the locations from which they took the biopsies and don't mind a burn for a while afterwards.

they dont all do biopsies, I think angel was referring to another situation.

Yes, I was talking about a different point in time when I had the EGD; not the sleeve surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
