My 18 year old wants VS

Recommended Posts

Labrys here...

She's doing pretty well. The low low carbs are a bit difficult but she keeping at it. Just a week to go!

Any advice on the almost all Protein and low (<30grms) carbs diet??

One word:

Willpower.

30 grams is so low. The lowest I have ever gone is 80 and it was very difficult. She is a champ for staying on board with it! She is on her way to a new life.

All good advice. My concern would be that she fully understands that her eating habits will change for life. Is she mature enough to make that decision or does she think it is a cure all? It is not a magic bullet, but a tool. The hard work is done by you, and it is hard work initially. She has to be prepared mentally for this. I love the advice of having her meet with a counselor both before and after the surgery. It will be a major adjustment for her.

Hey all... my 18 year old is 2 days out of surgery. If you had this you know that this is the toughest day of recovery. She is doing great. Walking and using the breath machine.

Thanks for all your good advice. It is well taken and I am on the look for a good counselor. She went through a couple of years of counseling with the adolescent bariatric group near us. She is looking forward to her new body.

Wow Labrys this is great! How much did she lose on her pre-op?

What a lucky girl to have a mom taking care of her.

I wish I had my mom, sniff, sniff.

Labrys, thank you for posting your daughters journey. You are a good mom in the support that you are giving her.

It won't be long now till you will have to take her shopping for some new hip clothes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
