Back home - very difficult post op for me

Recommended Posts

I had a horrible post op experience-adverse reaction to the post surgery pain meds.

I'm home now.

Can't sleep.< /p>

Can't eat (obviously) more than 3 T of any broth.< /p>

Sore sore sore....

At least I've lost some weight.

Susi -

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience - that has to suck.

I couldn't sleep for the first week I was home - try taking some liquid benadryl - it really helped me to sleep. I'd sleep maybe 90 minutes - and it wasn't restful as I had the most horrid dreams. The benadryl took care of that and after taking it for a couple of nights, I began to sleep through the night.

As for the 3T of broth - that's okay - just drink it often - they told me 2oz every 15 minutes for the first 3 days. Just focus on getting in as much liquid as you can so you don't get dehydrated.

Where are you sore? Did they give you anything for pain?

Hang in there, the worst is over the best is yet to come.

my insides are sore and just a general uncomfortableness (is that a word!!!? LOL)

they did give me some pain meds that kinda help, but not as much as I'd like.. ;-P

i'm thinking of trying the benadryl tonight..i have the pills and i've been taking my other pills well

oh, i've been sipping on a huge bottle of H2OK with Protein all day long since i've been out

i really had a bad experience but i kinda feel like i shouldn't type too much about it because i don't want to scare anyone..kwim?

sorry no caps..too lazy here

It's a word now if it wasn't before. I didn't feel sore at all inside, just where the drainage bag was and once they took it out, it was more like sore muscles.

You're lucky if you can swallow your pills -- I still have to cut mine into tiny pieces in order to be able to get them down.

Keep sip, sip, sipping - that is so important!

You should post your experience - good or bad - everyone should know what might happen -- not everyone's experiences are wonderful -- I'm 4 weeks out and still have problems and have posted about it -- everything helps someone. Obviously, that is your choice in the end though.

You should definitely post about your experience! People need to know everything that can happen ... information is power.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience and you should definitely post it here. People need to hear the good and the bad, to make informed decisions.

I hope that you are on the road to recovery soon.

Hugz,

Penny~

Susan, I have a question for you, sorry to taking over the thread to ask, but here goes...

How was your flight back from surgery?

I'm dreading that most of all.

I have to fly all the way to New Orleans from San Diego. I don't know how long each flight is, but I worry about blood clots. Flying makes me swell up so badly... I just hope that I can get a seat where I can easily get up and move around. I'm flying Southwest and there are no first or business class seats.. so I need to protect my tummy from the seat belts also..

Any advice would be appreciated..

Thanks,

Penny~

Penny, I was really worried about the flights as well. We went from San Diego to Jacksonville, Florida. But, I was actually pretty comfortable. On each flight, we originally had three people in our row. My hubby mentioned to the flight attendant that I had surgery and if it could be arranged to where we have just he and I in a row, that would be wonderful and they actually accommodated us. That worked out well because I was able to stretch out more. When possible, I got up and moved around and had no issues at all. If you find the seat belts to be too tight, ask for an extender so you have a little extra room.

Bless you! Same here with post-op nightmare as a result of adverse effects of anaesthesia and morphine! Can't sleep, nightmares, uncomfortable.... All quite normal though (have had 4 ops to date) and will improve with time. Just get plenty of fluids and rest!

I'm sorry you are having troubles. I'm over a week post op and haven't had too many problems. Just back pain and weakness. As for sleep, that's the one thing I'm really good at :-). Hope things get better.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
