3 days postop sleeve and HUNGRY

Recommended Posts

I am so hungry....i am craving chinese food and kfc badly...I thought my cravings would go away. Now i feel like i am starving to death. the Protein Shakes are disgusting and i can only keep down popsicles at this moment. Do you think it would hurt if I tried to eat something chewable?

The purpose of the post-op diet is to allow your staple line to heal and advancing your diet without talking to your surgeon could be VERY dangerous. If you're allowed to have Protein Shakes and don't like the ones you have, try different brands. Call your surgeon before making any decisions and DO NOT try solids at 3 days post-op.

Absolutely! Your stomach is stapled off and you could develop a leak if you ate anything at this point. then you would need a feeding tube.

No surgery type fixes head hunger. Hang in there, you have no choice. You have to do this. Call your doc and ask for more suggestions.

If you get a leak you won't be eating or drinking anything for months. You'll have a feeding tube stuck in your gut for nutrition or an IV. Stick it out, you can do this.

IOW, yes, I do think it would hurt a great deal to eat food at this point.

Can you have any Protein Drinks? If so, the Soy Slender ones taste great and are available in the health food section of your grocery store (on the shelf in cardboard container). You can also have broths. Kelloggs lemon Protein Water doesn't have a lot of protein but at least there is 5 grams and some Fiber in it.

i am buying Protein Powder from the local health food store and mixing it with slim milk...it is staying down somewhat, but it doesn't cure the hunger pains. i am sorry, but I thought this postop diet was going to be easy. I am just disappointed b/c I kind of feel like I have been duped.

Call your surgeon and tell him/her that you're hungry and having difficulty with the diet. I am sure they heard this from other people and may have alternative foods they will allow you to eat. If you're allowed to do skim milk, it sounds like you're on a full Fluid diet. If you are, you can have creamed Soups.< /span>

It does take awhile for the hunger to subside. Perhaps you should try a different Protein drink.

You will be amazed later on when that hungry feeling goes away and you just don't feel hungry.

Wasnt me....Today is the first day of real solids and OMG what a difference. Daisy was right, you got to take it slow, chew well and stop before you are full. I ate my first piece of chicken breast and got too full, I was so sick. I will definitely be more careful next time.

It is definitely a miserable feeling. I would rather eat mushy.

I have lost all the weight I gained when my band was unfilled. My clothes are too big for me. I don't want to go out and buy new clothes. I am going to learn to eat solids slowly over the next few months. I am still learning. It's still very hard for me to judge.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
