Hedwig 0 Posted May 20, 2006 Honest, I have a problem with coke. It tastes so good. oh, sorry I know you thought I meant soda. right:confused: ? Anyway, I have my preop appointment on the 23rd, and I followed my doctors wished to quit smoking:faint: , drink 6 glasses of Water, high Protein diet, and exercise every day for 45 min:faint: . I broke it up to 25 minutes twice a day. ok, so I did it all. problem is I didn't give up soda yet:rolleyes: . I am willing to give it up I just wanted to enjoy it while I could. I also started to munch on hard candy. Yes I know I could do sugar free but didn't. The smoking thing was real hard and still is. so I suck on jolly ranchers all day:eek: . ok, sorry about the long discription. Thing is I didn't loss any weight because of my two bad habits:omg: . Like I said I will give them up but I am so scared to get wieghed in, in 4 days and be so humiliated. Not banded yet and allready being a butt head:o . I just wanted to get this off my chest. My friend said maybe I gained muscle because at first I did drop 5 lbs. Does that even make sense? muscle? Please help me not be mortified when I have to tell the doc the truth. thanks guys I know I am a dork please be gentle. lol. xoxo
Jachut 487 Posted May 20, 2006 Quitting smoking is quite enough to concentrate on at one time! Jeez, what does your doctor think you are, superhuman? Give yourself a huge pat on the back for tackling that one and worry about the rest of it later. I dont really drink more than the odd diet coke - like a can once every few months, but I can drink soda just fine, you dont necessarily have to give it up, although if you're drinking the full calorie stuff I'm sure you know how many calories it could add to your day. Nobody could give up all those things, change all those habits at once. Dont be so hard on yourself, you've done great so far. I'd tell your doc the truth. A1ikou 0 Posted May 20, 2006 I think you've done a great job too:clap2: Giving up smoking is one of the hardest things you can be asked to try and you've done it! This alone should prove to the doc that you're serious and a go getter...regardless of what his scale says! You've upped the exercise and begun to change your diet... hell these things are hard enough when you have the band to help you never mind before. I used to drink tons of diet coke and fanta light before my band, now I just don't bother. I walk around with a bottle of Water in my hand and just keep on drinking  !!! With the efforts you've made already I think your determination to give up the coke will be easier than you think. Go into the docs with a huge positive attitude and let him know all the things you have done- then the scale wont seem so daunting! Good luck with the appointment. CCBSTX 0 Posted May 20, 2006 Good for you! That giving-up-smoking-thing is VERY difficult! Your body will LOVE you for it, in the long run. I love all sodas, diet or regular. However, after banding I don't do well with the carbonated stuff. It feels bad and my stomach is distended. I love a sip and no more... Congrats and good luck. Nykee 13 Posted May 20, 2006 MY SURGEON said he would NOT do the surgey if I didnt lose the weight.. It wasnt about being humiliated.. it was about being denied the band. He said I would have too much fat around my liver for him to be able to do the procedure safely. The rapid weight loss shrinks that fat on the liver. I had to lose 40 pound at LEAST.. and I did (41pounds). I only had alittle over a month to do it, I put it off and put it off, wanting to have all these yummy foods for the 'last time'... I was a nervous wreck, constantly weighing myself daily to make sure.. I kept cheating but somehow I made it.. (low carb diet) If he does the surgery anyway. Than 0h well, your alittle humiliated.. REMEMBER POP and JOlly Ranchers are going to pass right through the band. You can still have them anytime you want. As well as lots of other candies and sugar laden drinks.< /p> I am glad to see your possitive about being able to give them up.. Make sure your doctor sees your good attitude and it wont be so bad. waterlily1072 5 Posted May 20, 2006 I was a diet coke fiend, can't tolerate it now at all. I drank it all the way up till midnight the night before surgery. Quitting smoking is awesome and really hard, good for you :clap2:
Mvpo8961 1 Posted May 20, 2006 Congrats on the stopping smoking. I quit 2 1/2 years ago. I agree it is hard to take that on and everything else. As far as soda goes I have drank diet sunkist for 10 years exclusively. I happen to like the taste carbonated or flat. So I am going to keep some bottles in which I have decarbonated them to fix my need for soda occassionally. Some folks think flat soda yuck I think yum better than nothing. Hedwig 0 Posted May 20, 2006 Thanks so much everyone. I feel so much better. I know the hardest part was giving up smoking. I already stopped the candy am chewing sf gum. thanks again for the positive words. xoxo
MiaHalliwell 4 Posted May 20, 2006 Congrats on giving up the cigarettes! Thats huge! I was at a teleconference with my doc and he was asked about the weight loss before surgery and he told the person as long as they didn't gain anything they should be fine. About the liver, that makes sense I guess it depends on how much you weigh right now. Good luck!
Carlene 12 Posted May 21, 2006 I stopped smoking about 12 years ago. Now I chew SF gum instead. It's a lot cheaper and much better for my health. Congrats on the smoke free thing. It is the best gift you could ever give yourself.
nightingale2u 42 Posted May 21, 2006 I was a Diet Cokeaholic prior to surgery... never touched a drop afterwards until after a year or so out. Now I have a carbonated drink once in ahwile but I would rather have something W/O carbonation. I can tell you that I had a HUGE headache for days from the caffeine withdrawals after my surgery so something to keep in mind. Congrats on quitting smoking... that is an awesome accomplishment! I quit a few months back and it's the hardest thing I have ever had to do. One addiction at a time... ROme wasn't built in a day.
