Why is there a clear liquid phase?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the medical justification for the clear liquid stage, which seems to exist for some docs and not others? I ask because, like many others, I really cannot stand any of the clear Protein Drinks. I think Isopure tastes like someone put melted plastic or soap in it. Additionally, when I was travelling yesterday and really out of it I bought and drank half an odwalla soy milk super Protein Drink and had no reaction whatsover. Today, I ended up having two mix in Water Protein drinks -- the very light, high quality brand. Again no issue.

Now, I am willing to follow the diet if it has a reason, but I really have to know it!

THanks:confused1:

Your stomach is going to be healing from being stapled and cut away. If you were to throw food or even liquids with a texture in there can you imagine the mess you would have on your hands? ? ? Plus, it's not a simple nip tuck procedure. It's traumatic, there's significant swelling.

Plus, your anatomy has forever changed, and it's a huge shock to your body. The stomach has to get used to working again, and considering 75-85% of the rest of your stomach is gone, it needs time to adjust.

Mac's doctor doesn't say clear liquid, he says thin liquid. Personally, I don't know what the difference would be between thin and clear. To me, thin is as thin as Water.< /strong>

The ASMBS says in this paper somewhere:

http://www.asmbs.org/Newsite07/resources/bgs_final.pdf

"A clear liquid diet is often used as the first step in postoperative nutrition, despite some evidence that it might not be warranted [172]."

I haven't looked into it past that.

HI

I am 2 days out today and am on liquids....but I wouldn't call them Clear Liquids. My doctor has me on Protein drinks and broths and non chunky yogurts. There is a great protein drink called Unjury that has 50% of your daily protein once mixed with milk. you can only get it at www.unjury.com try it out!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
