Embarrassed that I'm a newbie and venting..

Recommended Posts

but anyway! I need to do it where people understand :)

I've been a week (tomorrow)on this Clear liquids, low carb/low fat pre-op diet and I've only gone down 8 pounds (which are probably all water).

Why haven't I lost more?

Does this mean I won't lose after the surgery?

Every day my calories are under 800 and my carbs never go over 30.

Sorry to vent and it's probably lame..but I'm frustrated!

I could never lose weight on ANY diet??? Not even liquids? ??:thumbup1:

No, problem. I don't know what I'd do if I had to do the pre-op diet. I am sure I'd be posting with the same vent! :thumbup1: It's easier to see how great someone else is doing than it is to admit to yourself that you are doing great.

8 pounds is great and more than I lost on my pre-op diet. I do not KNOW how you are doing liquids for 2 weeks or even why ... I know the whole liver shrinking thing; however, I ate real food - high Proteins, low carbs and my liver was perfect so says the doc on the day of surgery -- maybe you should do liquids every other day and try high protein/low carbs on the off days? Just to keep yourself sane -- because it seems like an eternity when you're on the post-op liquid phase -- mine was 10 days clear; 10 days full and then 10 days mushies ... thank goodness I'm into mushies now --

Hang in there and YES you will lose with the surgery. Don't even let that thought enter your head. I'm 3 weeks out of surgery tomorrow and have lost 21 lbs. -- that is 1 lb. per day --

Hang in there and if it helps - VENT away!

Hi Susie,

Not a problem about venting. This IS just the place for it. Everyone has weight losses at different stages. All of a sudden you have started to cut back on what you body is getting and your body is say "waiting a minute this lady is trying to stave me and so I am going to hold on to some of this fat just in case." It also has to do with your age and how much exercise you are getting too? It has NOTHING to do with the kind of weight loss that you will have after your surgery.

So sit back and enjoy the journey you are about to go on. The sleeve in not something magical that will just make the fat melt off your body. So before you have this surgery, I want you to get your head on straight and understand that the "sleeve surgery" is only A TOOL that will allow you to use to achieve the weight loss that you need to become healthy and get the fat off your body. You have a BIG roll to play in this weight loss and that is to eat your Protein, veggies and some fruit in small amounts. Then you have to exercise to get the fat off your bodytoo--I know you didn't want to hear the word exercise--I use to feel just like you. But, with the combination of good healthy eating and exercise you will do fantastic. I hope that helps you understand that we just take one day at a time. I can say don't stresss out over all this "how much weight loss did you have." What ever it is, is better than gaining more weight. There may be times when you only lose 3 pounds in 3 weeks, but I look at it and say WOW that is great, I ate good, and liked what I ate and I didn't gain a pound.

Stay in touch and keep coming back here and letting us know how you are doing.

Oh, Suzanne..I definitely know it's a tool. I needed to be forced to set my life straight Healthwise :biggrin0:

I agree, at least those 3 pounds will be ones that STAY off..KWIM?

And I found out today why I haven't lost. AF has started...albeit 2 mos late!!!

Sorry if that's TMI.

I wish I had the energy to exercise more right now. I did ride my bike about 2 miles one evening and I walked about 2 miles another evening, but when I was done I felt like I might pass out.

My poor DH, he said exactly what you said about my body being in shock with calorie difference...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
