Weightloss surgery study @ Johns Hopkins

Recommended Posts

I'm in New Orleans and I think Hopkins has partnered with my hospital because we were offered an opportunity to participate in a research study but with no money. Also Insurance is covering the sleeve. I'm living proof. United HEalthcare is paying for my sleeve 100%.

Hello everyone. I am to be sleeved on Feb 1 2011 pending in surance approval. I was a little disappointed that my surgeon changed his mind from gastric bypass to VSG. But since reading all the sucess stories here, I feel that it may be a better choice. I have at least 110 lbs to lose and I hope this is the only procedure I have to have. Please let me know if I can accomplish this wieght loss ith this surgery.

Beat of Luck to all.....Judy

Many people on here have lost that much and more. I believe you have dodged a bullet by being recommended the VSG over the RNY. Search here for more information, there is lots of posts talking about why this is so.

I decided against participating in this study. The time committment was not something I could work with - 9.5 hour days under observation plus travel time - I'd have to take leave and hire sitters, and I don't let anyone drive my kids but me, let alone transferring the car seats and all that!! The extra radiation and muscle biopsies kinda bugged me, too - it is an extremely comprehensive study. (Altho I understand you may be able to opt out of the muscle biopsies...)

THANK YOU - everyone who does choose to participate - the results will be extremely interesting and beneficial to all!!

Sheri

I'm with you. I live within 15 minutes of Hopkinsm but my time is certainly more valuable than that which they are offering. $2500 for 22 9 hr days? That's $12/hr not including travel and mileage. That is equivalent to about a $20k/yr full time job.

Is Johns Hopkins still conducting this surgery? I am pre-op and live and work outside of Baltimore.

I'm sure they are still doing the surgery, but don't know about the study.

I am in Towson, and did a lot of research before making a decision about where to have surgery. After a lot of thought I chose the GBMC Comprehensive Obsisity Management Program (COMP) over Hopkins Bayview.

I am now two eeks out of surgery and couldn't be happier.

Hi red cobra! I also have chosen gbmc over Hopkins though I live in Joppa - about equal distance from me. Gbmc is definitely better. Who was your doctor - Liao or Moeinolmolki ?

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
