Hi All

I am a new member going through the insurance approval process. Apparently, GEHA requires a 6 month doctor approved diet with monthly visits. I have a very high BMI and have succesfully controlled my type II diabetes by greatly reducing the amount I eat and eliminating as much as possible refined carbs. Hopefully, the insurance co will take this into accountand wave the 6 month diet requirment.

If not it will be at least 6 months before I get approval for the procedure.

I certainly don't want to wait. :phanvan

Any words of wisdom about the insurance isue would be appreciated.

I wish you all the luck with GEHA and hope they approve you. Maybe if you have a history of weight loss attemps they may take that into consideration.

Most companies demand that 6 month medically supervised diet. Since you're diabetic, couldn't your MD write a letter stating that he/she has been medically supervising your weight loss attempts for X years? Welcome to the board!

Thanks Elisabethsew.

My doctor has already provided a letter of medical need and also stated that I have been on a low glycemic index diet for 5 years. During that time my need for injected insulin was eliminated. My eyes were also in bad shape when I went on the diet (I needed two laser eye surgeries) and my eyes have dramitically improved as well.

Unfortunately it's true. Most insurances will require the 6 month diet. But the fact that your Dr. stated he has been monitoring for 5 years should be plenty. Good luck, hope it all works out for you.

Please let me know how it goes for you. I have GEHA too.

I live in Montgomerry County. I need to find an experienced surgeon and go through the 6 month supervised diet attempt - unless my blood pressure, angina, and lower limb edema make the delay dangerous. Trouble is I don't know any docs and I don't want to pick one out of the phone book!

Any advice you can share will help. Thanks

I live in the Northwest about 75 miles north of Seattle and am going to the Northwest Weight Loss Surgery center. There are many Montgomery Counties so I am not sure what part of the country you live in.

As for GEHA insurance, I am severely overweight (a BMI of over 60) and have many of the problems associated with severe obesity. I also have been closely supervised by a fine family doctor for about 5 years and have been on a low glycemic index diet which has helped control my diabetes.

When applying to GEHA all this supervision was documented by my family doctor and he wrote a letter as well explaining my medical need for the Lapband and the fact that I had done much in the way of diet to control my weight and my Diabetes.

The effort was successful in eliminating the need for insulin (I still take oral medication) and bringing my diabetes under control but resulted in very modest weight loss.

Fortunately, by documenting my efforts diet wise and my need I was approved for the procedure the first time I applied and am now going through the pre surgery hoops.

Good luck in your efforts

Papaya

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
