How long until you went back to work?

Recommended Posts

Hi, to all. I'm new to this site. I went for my consultation on Mon., 6/22. I had decided on the band but after I had gone to the seminar a few weeks ago, the sleeve sounded like a better option for me, my surgeon agreed.

I'm 37, happily married, mother of two awesome kids (ages 20 and 10). I'm 5'6, 250 lbs. I was very athletic in high school and weighed 115 on my wedding day, 17 years ago. After several personal tradgedies, I became very depressed and ate my way up to 200 and have gradually added the last 50. Like many of you I've been on EVERY diet. I read a post earlier that said she loved to exercise but paid for it later. That's me too. My husband and I have always enjoyed hiking but in the last year it just hurts too much.

So, I'm ready to begin to live again! My surgery is scheduled for August 13. :shocked4:

For those of you who have already had the surgery, when did you go back to work? I pretty much sit all day at my job but it is very stressful and high paced. I'm hoping to be back in 7 days.

Also, dare I ask, what was the level of pain? I've had my gallbladder removed laproscopically, so I'm wondering if it will be any more intense than that.

Thanks to all who have posted their experience. It's great to get the insight. I look forward to talking with all of you through this journey.

My surgery was on June 12th, a Friday, and I went back to work the following Friday. I sit most of the day, too, so you should tolerate it well. This is the first majory surgery I've ever had, so I can't compare it to anything else. However, truly the only place I hurt was where the drain bag was - other than that, nothing hurt.

Welcome to the site and hope you get answers to your questions.

Curious as to how long you had the drain before it was removed???

I had surgery on a Wed. and went back to work the following Tues. I could have easily gone back to work on Monday though.I have a desk job. I had no pain anywhere other then the first night of surgery. I had pain in my left shoulder which is common, from the gas they use during surgery. It was gone in the morning.

I was surprised that I never had any pain after that anywhere. I was expecting to be in pain for a few days.

The drain was removed the 3rd day after surgery.

The drain came out on Sunday -- it was still a tender spot afterwards, but not as bad as when the drain was in -- not everyone has a problem with that either, it was my spot. It remained sore for about 8-9 days and each day it was less sore -- today it doesn't hurt at all.

I could have gone back to work, sooner, too ... however, I had some intestinal "issues" and thought I'd better stick close to a bathroom ... I probably could have gone back on Wed or Thurs.

I also had the left shoulder blade pain that moved around to just under my left boob the next day -- I just kept a heating pad on it when I wasn't off walking and that seemed to help alot.

Okay, one more question...SORRY!! ;-)

How long was the hospital stay? I thought I knew this one, but now I'm not so sure!

I think that depends on who is doing your surgery.

My hospital stay was 3 days - surgery on Friday morning - discharged on Monday morning. I've heard others who were only in the hospital 1 day. That I would not have liked at all. 3 days in the hospital and 3 different leak tests.

That and the fact that the restroom was close to your office ... right? That is why I stayed home an extra day -- was afraid I might not make it in time at the office.:001_tt2:

My Sleeve doctor quoted me 4 weeks off after surgery? Wonder why? Is it because it's in the States?

Holy HECK - 4 weeks??? I figured that's about what you took off for a TT, not a sleeve. I'd be out of my mind being off work for 4 weeks ... unless of course I was doing something really fun!

Do you do a lot of hard labor for your employment? If so I could see it then but most people go back in a few days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
