first timer questions about pain/pressure

Recommended Posts

hey all, glad i found this site. (by the way big paul-excellent post today!)

my question; when i drink Water, i get a pressure/pain sensation that just doesn't seem to go away. almost like a stomachache. on occasion i hear/feel some gurgling in my upper abdomen. can't seem to get a good burp going. the pain varies as though it is gas.

wasn't there when i awoke this am, or yesterday am, but sure was after i started drinking Water. i take a few swallows at a time, and no pain immediately is noted. but, 20-30 minutes later it starts. yeterday seemed like it lasted most of the afternoon.

i drank a Protein shake this am after i woke and did not experience this. seems to be only with water.

i am only 3 days post op, been back to work lite load since yesterday. sleeping fine through the night.

the amount of water i take in at a time is probably 1/4 to 1/3 cup. too much? gaviscon doesn't help this pain.

later in the day yesterday i had a couple popsicles, a pudding,. and a shake and had no problems. seems to be with just the water. it is at room temp.

ps; reading some of the posts about erosions and slippage and removal of bands is making me nervous. does anyone know what % of band procedures have these complications nowadays?

Hey, I saw that no one had answered you yet, so I thought I'd try to help. You may be trying to drink too much at one time. I think the popsicle is going down more slowly since you have to eat that or let it melt so it kind of trickles down. I get pain when I drink too close to eating. This morning I ate some Breakfast and needed to take a drink big enough to take Motrin for a headache, I wish I hadn't. I couldn't even talk to people in the parking lot at church, I had to head straight to the bathroom and got sick. I knew better. Once on solid food, they are NOT kidding, don't drink and eat at or near the same time. IT HURTS bad! Feels like a heart attack. I read a posting earlier that said 3% have slippage. I had my lap band last March 2006 and haven't had much trouble, other than getting food stuck, the problem described above, and not losing fast enough for my liking due to insufficient exercise and giving in to food cravings. IT is so hard to fight this mental battle. I tried to get my daughter to eat the last small piece of chicken so I wouldn't eat it tonight, it is like some overwhelming drive to leave it alone and throw it away. I remembered a sign on the wall at Curves (where I need to get back to exercise) It says, "never let the fear of waste affect your waist" I threw it away. Good luck.

Thanks for the honesty.....I hear so much about the good stuff...don't get me wrong...it is great...but I need to hear the raw truth too....I am going to be banded in 4 days...I am so nervous! I needed to hear about the drinking and eating at the same time and how to drink very slowly....THANK YOU!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
