Can the gall bladder be removed when the sleeve surgery is done. Mine needs out. RnY can do it at the same time but they say they will not do it when installing a band. Anyone have any experience with this?

Sure it can be done, it's surgeon skill and not a matter of IF it can be done with being sleeved.

Not sure why it couldn't be done at the same time as banding. I don't know that I recall seeing anyone post either way.

Regardless, yes.. it can be done at the same time as a sleeve.

I think it depends on the surgeon and their comfort level. When I talked to Dr. Joya's helper, he stated that Dr. Joya prefers to do the surgeries separately, as there is more chance of infection in the stomach staple line should the gallbladder happen to have a problem or burst during the removal process. I've had other docs say similar things.

However, my surgeon that would have been here in the states had my insurance come through would have done both at the same time.

I'm going to get my VSG first, then if my gallbladder worsens, I will get thath done here, as my insurance will cover that, and it is an outpatient surgery (no overnight). Plus, they'll be able to use the VSG scar lines for gallbladder surgery as well :thumbup1:

There are people with bands who had their gallbladders out at the same time... so it can be done.

My surgery is 6/29 in Mexico and as of right now Dr. Garcia plans on taking my gallbladder out at the same time as my VSG "if he deems it's safe". I don't have insurance so I hope my surgery is uneventful and he can do it.

Kristopia I was wondering about that, I had gallbladder surgery last year and now that I am pursuing VSG I wondered if they could go in through those laproscopic scars from the previous surgery. I am putting this on my list of questions for my surgeon too. Thanks

My surgery was 6/12 and I had the works done... Hiatal hernia repaired, gallbladder removed and VSG with no problems. I had a prior ultrasound of my lower abdomen that showed gallstones, due to the increased risk us post-opers have of developing gallstone problems, my surgeon recommended that it be removed at the same time... I was all for it after I heard about what gallstone attacks can be like... Also, would rather not have to have a second surgery/recovery period.

So far, I haven't noticed any difference in my post op recovery versus other's recovery without the removal. I do have a few extra small incisions and my bigger incision is on the right side instead of the left.

I'm glad to hear all turned out well for you. I'm hoping once he get's in there he discovers he can take the gallbladder out (especially since I've already been diagnoses with gallstones) and be done with it all at once.

Hi I had my vsg and gallbladder removed on May 25. I have had no issues and I feel great. The surgery took longer of course about an extra hour. I went to the ER about a month before surgery for a gallbladder attack. I had no idea what going on. The pain was awful! The hospital wanted to remove it due to gallstones, but I had them contact my surgeon. I didn't want to be put under twice in a month. I maintained a very bland diet. Watch the seasonings you use and avoid diary, NO SPICY foods. I was fine for the month. I also took an antibotic to be safe. Good luck to you all!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
