Soon to have the sleeve

Recommended Posts

My story is pretty simple. About 6 years ago I found myself stepping on the scale and weighing 297lbs. I was horrified! Until I married I had never gone over 140lbs, but I had 3 little boys back to back and was on bedrest with each one. I got used to being lazy and obviously gained ALOT of weight. Anyways, I decided I was going to lose some weight before I hit 300lbs, if I could not then I would get gastric bypass, but I did not want to do this yet. I cut back on portions and got more active, after 3 years I had lost about 90lbs. Cut to present day 3 years and another child later (this time a little girl) and I am still right around 210lb.

Knowing that I have stayed this way for 3years and can't seem to move past it I have finally decided to have WLS. At first I thought my only options were the band or GB, then I found this site! (well the old one) I read about the sleeve and people's experiences with it and got interested. I researched for a while before I started posting and asking questions, but in the long run I decided the sleeve was a perfect fit for me. I am now scheduled to have mine June 10th and I am really excited!

I really want to thank each and everyone who answered questions and gave me advice. Those who helped steer me into the right direction, and everyone else who just posted their experience for me to follow! I will keep you all updated!

Well it is about 36 hours before I leave, I am getting less nervous and more excited each day! However we will see how I am doing tomorrow! I have my bag mostly packed, and tonight I go to dinner at my favorite Chinese restaurant, a break from my lower carb diet this past week. Tomorrow I plan to eat very light to prepare for all the blood work that comes Tuesday A.M. Anyways, I will let you know how everything goes when I get there. Any last minute advice is always welcome!!!

We'll (me and Ruthi) will look for you on the 11th after our pre-op tests and expect you to check up on us on the 12th after our surgeries ... we'll "party" together ... I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a safe journey and surgery on the 10th.

I am so excited that you guys will be there! It somehow makes it easier to know that someone else that I know will be going through this with me while I am there and we can visit and compare...well for the short time before I leave. But hey, you will definitely know what to expect going in!

Okay so I am here, gowned and awaiting surgery in about an hour. I have embarrassed myself by falling apart a few times, they definitely know that I am nervous. I am excited to be starting my new life though! On the ride here from San Diego there was another sleever who got hers done a year ago, she was about my weight going in and now is 120lbs. It was nice to talk to her. She has no regrets and loves her sleeve! She is now getting everything made pretty again...lol...you know boobs fixed, Tummy Tuck, all that good stuff! Anyways, I will report later if not too drugged up!

Hope everything goes fine with you but you can't just count on the surgery to keep you thin. It helps to have nutritional support for at least two years after your surgery. I know because I have had the surgery plus I have put some weight back on by snacking on too high of calorie items. Praise God for the nutritional help that you get in the States that comes with the price of the surgery and lasts for two years. Without them, I would of kept on gaining. Their very supportive.

Very true! That's why the better Mexican doctors have full time nutritionists... free for life. It comes with the price of surgery for us too.

I just wish US doctors didn't charge for this service beyond 2 years.

Are you back on track now with nutrition? Exercise?

There is a great study I just posted here:

http://verticalsleevetalk.com/research-statistics/183-what-exercise-benefits-exercise-must-read.html

Remember, exercise and your food plan keeps the pounds off.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
