So I didn't come home with enough Nexium for the next three months. Vegaslady graciously volunteered to pick up some when she is down there. I will run out before then though.

Questions for my medial gurus out there:

What does the mup in the Nexium stand for? Can't I get my PCP here to just prescribe it for me?

I was taking Protonix prior to the surgery. Is that crushable? Would that work as well as the Nexium and therefore can be substituted? My insurance is paying for the Protonix.

MUP means the nexium dissolves in Water. Yes, you can take Protonix and yes, you can crush it. The only pills that can't be crushed are ones that say LA (long acting), ER (extended release), and pills that are enteric coated (like some aspirins) because they dissolve in the small intestine, NOT the stomach.

If you do get the Nexium in Mexico, ask for the 40 mg mups and break them in half. Dr. Aceves prescribes 20 mg a day for 3 months. Buying the larger dose is cheaper and you get double the amount for a few dollars more. If your Protonix is covered, don't bother with the Nexium.

Thanks for that tidbit of information, I'll remember that when I purchase mine (and Rosebud2 if she decides she still wants me to get it)

Thank you so much. When I run out of the Nexium I'll just switch to the Protonix as it is fully covered under my insurance plan.

You can also use prilosec OTC. That's what I use.

what does it cost in Mexico for the nexium?

I *think* it is about $50/month, quite a bit cheaper than in the US.

Elisabeth? Is this correct? I don't use it so I'm not 100% sure. I do know that it is cheaper to buy the 40mg strength and use 1/2 tablet daily for the 20mg dose.

I appreciate the hint -- I'll remember that when I get down there (I hope) ... how long do you need to use the MUPs Nexxium? I have the caplets ... will I be able to take them at some point?

I bought a 2 month supply of 40 mg Nexium and I think it was @ $100. Once you go to a regular diet, you can take the pill whole. Dr. Aceves gives you a 2 week supply so you'll need to buy 2 additional weeks worth.

Are you writing to me? If so, I'd be happy to but I don't really have any plans on going there. Really, the only time I go now is when a friend is going for a band fill and I don't see that in the near future either.

I was going to ask who you were talking too...I will be going down there on the 10th if you want me to pick you up some ... and IF there isn't a limit to what you can purchase and/or bring back across the border. WASa any idea?

Supposedly there is a 90 day supply limit on non narcotics. But if you take 8 a day you can get 12 bottles. ;o)

They've never said anything to me about it and I bring it back all the time. Last time I was there I picked up some for me and my friends. I bought about 10 bottles. Nobody said a word. They really care about narcotics, illegal drugs, Cuban cigars, and food products.

Buy as much as you want.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
