hernia repair with band?? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had a hernia repair during their banding? I will have both done this Thursday and wanted to know if the recovery is longer?

Hernias are very common in obese people and it's also very common for people to have hernias repaired at the time of banding.

It might cause some more discomfort after surgery but it shouldn't significantly lengthen your recovery time. I would ask your doctor because he knows how severe your hernia is and what to expect.

I had one, and the doc didn't say it would be any different during recovery.

My repair took 45 minutes longer than expected in surgery. I had more soreness from that than the WLS. I do not regret it at all though. No Tums or Prilosec at all since. Before I took Prilosec and 4-5 Tums a night.

I had the hernia and my stomach was in the wrong place. Because of these I took 6 pills a day to eat because I coughed 24/7. I had them both repaired at the surgery and my recovery was fine. One thing my doctor did give me was a prescription for liquid Zantac to take every day for one month. It tasted awful so you have to make sure you put it in a drink. I have not had heart burn or any coughing since!!!!!!!!

Good luck with everything.

I had a hernia repair and my doc didn't give any special instructions. Same as regular lap band recovery.

I had a hernia repair and I'm 4 weeks out from being banded and feel great! I am no longer a prisoner to reflux hallelujah! And believe it or not, it really took care of a lot of digestive issues that I have had for so long. Haven't regretted that one bit, wish I had done it 20 years ago when I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
