Roller coaster ride of emotions

Recommended Posts

I was banded yesterday and had a medium hernia repaired (a 2 for 1 special :) )

Yesterday flew by. I was in surgery for 8AM and in my bed at home by 11Am

Sipping Water at the clinic post surgery I felt so sick. Water tricking down gas bubbling up.

The nurse immediately withdrew 10cc from the band and I relaxed.

The drugs keep the pain away and wear off an hour too soon. Yesterday I felt positive and confident.

Today i am flooded with emotions ( the monkeys chattering in my head) Shame; I failed at keeping weight off and resorted to surgery. Fear; What if I fail again. Sadness; oh and grief; I can't binge anymore .....especially when I am feeling Shame, Fear, Sadness.

My body hurts. Just writing lifts my spirit.....or wait maybe that's the drugs kicking in :)

I will make it through today, for now I am here feeling like I am on a roller coaster

All you are feeling is perfectly normal. Even the no more bingeing part. There is a sort of grief process for food as we used to know it. That too will pass...especially as you see positive things happening. I can tell you with complete certainty after 9 months that losing this weight feels so much better than eating to excess ever felt. and the fact that I do ot binge or overeat makes me feel empowered and in control. Again...a much better feeling than the pleasure of overeating. Hang in there...you will see what I mean soon enough. Welcom to the other side!

I know those chattering monkeys -- they are full of crap! Send them on their way. You have been through a lot -- anesthesia and medication can take their toll, Take it easy and best wishes for a speedy recovery and reentry into your life. YOUR LIFE. Love the comments above re: grief, etc. know that you are not alone.

I was banded on Monday, I asked myself all the same things. How did I get to this point? How did I fail (failure is a hard pill for me to swallow). Now I focus on my new goal. I found that ensure clear was a great thing to drink during the clear phase. Hang in there and focus on the new you.

Thanks all. Had a great night's sleep thanks to medication. I laughed early in the night and said to my partner, " Both these are good drugs. I can hear A Mariachi band " turned out not to be the drugs. It was Nuit Blanche night here in Toronto and there was a Mariachi band going up and around the street during the night.

Today already is a better day

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
