ChicagoRose 650 Posted October 4, 2013 My nutritionist only enforces the AFTER a meal 30 minute wait but I can drink beforehand. She says the research has changed so you should ask again. Try to eat moist food during your meal and worst case you can allow yourself 1-2 sips if you really need to. It's the full glasses of beverage during a meal that are a problem, they either wash down what you are eating and don't keep you full, or worse you could be full enough and the liquid could come back up. After I eat I just try to keep busy, by the time I clear off my family's table and do the dishes I can have my diet snapple =) 6 JOANNE M HOLL, LapbandLo, n2win and 3 others reacted to this
5.0junkie 770 Posted October 4, 2013 Worst part for me is the fear of the unknowns and the fear of trial and error. Not really looking forward to trying foods and waiting to see if the get stuck or not. I signed up for it though so I'm ready to tackle it. 6 kah1213, LapbandLo, dylanmiles23 and 3 others reacted to this

Breaking a 24 almost 25 year habit of drinking with meals is gonna be quite the test for me. You will get use to it. My biggest problem was Chinese restaurants. I am a huge tea drinker. I never have any drinks in restaurants any more. It is for your own safety and health. 3 JOANNE M HOLL, Debbie3sons and SeaSounders♥ reacted to this
Frederic 500 Posted October 4, 2013 I advocate people try to practice the post lap band restrictions for several months before being banded. If you build the habits ahead of time you'll be less likely to slip up when the consequences will be more serious. As for the drinking before/during/after meals it seems to be very specific to both people and their surgeon I'd encourage you to follow your surgeon's advice you need to develop a trusting relationship with each other the surgeon needs to trust you're being honest with them and you need to trust they have a reason for their recommendations. . 6 mrsto, jfc193, ☠carolinagirl☠ and 3 others reacted to this

B-52 7,113 Posted October 4, 2013 Drinking before, during or after a meal.....rules, and being told is one thing...but what do you experience if you do it??? I can drink before, but have found out for MYSELF what happens if I drink while I am eating, AND I also know how long I need to wait to drink after I eat, just from experience....and it has nothing to do with the washing food down theory..it is more real than that.... So when questions such as this arise, I have to ask...how does it affect you? Or does it affect you at all?? Some can drink, some cannot...some can eat certain foods, some cannot...and the list goes on and on... The longer you live with the band, the more you're going to realize your own limitations and freedoms...this was one of the biggest lessons I learned...and my Dr. had strict rules in the beginning...now, he smiles when I tell him certain things I have discovered..even if they go against the early rules (for newbies) But if you are just starting out, not in the green Zone, have no restriction, etc, you HAVE NO CHOICE but to follow the rules for your own safety sake...you need to get the band doing what it is supposed to do first before you can start living the new life.... 7 Jim1967, ☠carolinagirl☠, Kathytej and 4 others reacted to this

Jim1967 3,569 Posted October 4, 2013 I am with B-52 on this one. I am not saying go against what your Doctor advises BUT are they banded and are they living/working with it? I can drink at any time without any issues. Before, during and after. I tend to get a little bloated if I do drink to soon after certain meals and steak has always been a problem. As time goes on you learn how your tool works with your body. No two people are the same. I am not recommending you go against your Doctors 'rules' by any means but perhaps you could say "hey Doc I would like to try this or that, what do you think?" Probably say 'hell no' to you this early in the journey. You are newly banded only two weeks out so one thing is certain you need to proceed with caution so not to cause complications. Being only two weeks out you are in a healing stage. Eating, drinking it is all about the lifestyle change and that is what being banded is all about. Creating new habits. I am coming up on 18 months out and I have done my share of experimenting but I always defer to my Doctors judgement. If they hands down say no to something then I don't do it. Like carbonation. They have said absolutely not. So I have not had soda for almost two years now. 4 2muchfun, LapbandLo, ☠carolinagirl☠ and 1 other reacted to this

GuyMontag 1,264 Posted October 4, 2013 I drink right up until time to eat. I do not drink while I eat or 30 minutes after. After almost 5 years I honestly don't even notice anymore. I got pretty used to it after the first few months. The funny thing now is that when I cook for people I always forget to offer them drinks.< /p> 5 Kathytej, BayougirlMrsS, LapbandLo and 2 others reacted to this

2muchfun 8,927 Posted October 4, 2013 Getting stuck in the morning for me but it's so worth it. Drinking fluids when eating are an individual choice. imo B-52 said it well. Some of us it's just fine but others it won't work. If you're not losing weight and feel hungry shortly after a meal, stop drinking. The new information is in this link for drinking while eating but be aware of your body and your band and how this affects your own satiety and eating habits? GuyMontag 1,264 Posted October 4, 2013 I will say that I've personally known MANY friends with the lap band that have dilated their pouches by drinking while eating. Just keep that in mind. I've never heard of a single doctor saying that it's okay. Some rules docs differ on such as allowing carbonation. The drinking while eating isn't one of them. 2 Kathytej and BayougirlMrsS reacted to this
