Stress and weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just want to share a quick story. I was banded on 8/7. For the last 3 weeks I've been losing a pound here and there but nothing to write home about. I was exercising everyday and following my diet. Incredibly frustrating! I have a very stressful job (social worker for child protection) and my husband and I are adopting our first child who will be born in 8 days. So needless to say, my life had a lot of stress. At work my caseload was getting increasingly stressful so I took off 2 weeks from work before the baby arrives. It's been 1 week since my leave began and I've lost 5 pounds. 2 weeks ago I was struggling to not gain and now I'm down 5 (and exercising 4 days a week not 7). I never before believed the whole "stress makes it harder to lose weight" thing. Let me tell you, I am now a believer!! So if there is anyone out there that can relate to this story, please take the time to take care of yourself...especially after a life changing surgery. Thanks for reading :)

During stress your body creates cortisol the very culprit that increase insulin resulting in excessive storage of fat.

To decrease cortisol destressing is necessary. Some do yoga, some take a break, some just breeeeeeathe..

Now that you have seen stress first hand and how it effects wl I hope you can keep at away.

Congrats on the new baby and welcome to parenthood (oh... I guess the last comment is no longer valid SNICKER)

Take good care of yourself -- that exercise will definitely help with the stress. And just think, you'll have a baby to push around in a carriage pretty soon! So happy for you. I think I mentioned on another thread that I am adopted myself and we have an adopted child. Best wishes for the beautiful new family you are making!

Hi Erin,

Wonderful news, and I totally can relate to the stress and weight issue. That is MY issue also. Always under some kind of stress here, and it just beats me up zaps my energy to the point that I think my body just shuts down and conserves resource including the fat I want to get rid of.

Congratulations to you and your family! Keep up the good work the world needs people like you.

Does anyone think that when they r under a lot of stress their band gets tighter? I have had a very stressful year and a half, it is finally starting to calm down. I have days where I can eat until full and be fine other days I cannot eat even the smallest amount of food and throw up a lot.

Yes I agree! I've mentioned this to my doctor before and he didn't really have an answer. When I'm frustrated or really upset my band seems tighter.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
