I've got the "mushy" stage blues....

Recommended Posts

I lived on and still do homemade shepherd pie and Soups so I watch what goes into it... Also don't worry to much re gaining a pound or two at this stage it's because u haven't eaten for a while and that's normal.. It will come off

Seems like one can always think of stuff to make until it comes time to do it then you draw a blank. A friend of mine owns a restaurant and gave me several mushy ideas. One being really diced up or blended turkey breast then mixed with BBQ Sauce. Throw in a little mashed potato and you've got a nice meal. Another was chili of course but you can also do baked Beans with finally ground turkey. Throw in your favorite spices and that's one awesome meal full of flavor. If you like Mexican take refried beans, throw a little salsa on top on some crockpot chicken so its super soft. Cover it with a little finely grated cheddar of your choice and you've got another awesome mushy meal. I've got more on a list but ill have to find it. Biggest thing I can think of is using spices. They are fat free calorie free typically and add an abundance of flavor.

Two more! If you like Chinese get your favorite egg drop Soup, add in a little soy sauce and pepper. Cook some crockpot chicken in teriyaki sauce and pineapple juice. Tear it apart till its really fine or can even purée if you need to. Tasteeeee!

For several years Arby's sold a roast beef sandwich as an All American Burger. All it was was roast beef with Lawrys salt and steak seasoning and a slice of cheese. So you miss your cheeseburger??? Follow that mentality. Crockpot chicken again or ground Turkey, puréed if needed, cook in a little beef broth, throw in some steak seasoning and Lawrys salt, maybe a little onion powder, melt some cheddar on top and close your eyes. Just picture a fresh off the grill, dripping in juice cheeseburger with every bite!!!

I had a real difficult time with that phase two. I had a couple of things that were "go to" meals for me. I'll post them here (with recipes as needed) and you can try or ignore anything.

For dinner' date=' I made (half of) the following:

Potato Soup

1 32oz bag Frozen Southern Style Hash browns (be sure it has 0 fat) - thawed (or potatoes o’brien)

42 oz fat-free, reduced-sodium chicken broth or 3 14oz cans

Salt to taste

1 cup fat-free skim milk

1 cup Water

1 pkg McCormick original country gravy mix

6 Tbsp Hormel Bits, real crumbled bacon 30% less fat

Spray your soup pot with some non-stick cooking spray. Heat your pot and put in your hash browns. Brown them slightly; be sure not to burn the potatoes. If some of the potatoes get stuck to the bottom, that's ok. Pour in 1 can of the chicken broth and scrape up all the brown bits from the bottom of the pot. Then pour in the other two cans. Add salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer.

In the meantime, in a separate bowl, whisk together the water & milk with the package of country gravy mix. Once potatoes are soft and starting to break down, pour in gravy mixture. Mix in bacon bits and let cook until thick and creamy. Add Salt to taste (be careful with adding pepper as the gravy is very peppery) If you don't like chunks in your soup, blend the soup in small batches

Thanks for sharing this recipe. I now have something new to cook.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
