How do you fix a "slippage"

Recommended Posts

My band is slipped and I'd like to know what people have done to fix, repair or move-on to other surgery after a slippage. I'm know my doc said "discuss surgery options" because he's making me bring hubby to appointment - any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, we can't tell you that. How he fixes it will depend on your specific circumstances and the cause of the slip. He could unfill the band and hope it falls back into place, surgically re-position it, or surgically remove it entirely.

Good luck

Sometimes they will unfill it to see if it will go back into place on its own but if its too bad they will remove the band. At that time if you opt to have one of the other surgeries they will do it after the band removal depending on if any of the band eroded into the stomach wall, in that case you would have to wait until it heals. Best of luck no matter what you decide.

Any idea what caused the slippage?

Overeating - "stuck" - ultimately causing the slip. me and only me. I was a band patient for several years after my very successful first year. I moved away, far away, from home b/c of economic slow-down and my hubs loosing his job, went into a depression, ate bad...threw up from "stuck" a lot. I've been honest with my doc and myself and am just praying it can be fixed. I don't want to live life without it - I've already gained back a tremendous amount of weight.

Hi my band has slipped also. My dr. Removed all the Fluid and waited a month for swelling to go down he said sometimes it goes back in place on its own. I waited and then I felt ok. So he's proceeding to fill it again little by little very slowly. 1 cc at a time. He wanted to remove it all to get her. And not replace it. Or adjust it. I said no way, can we see how I feel? He said ok so now I feel normal again and am proceeding cautiously

Sincerely

I just want to say to Bk, thank you for your honesty. Seems like so many people tend to bash the band first and not take any responsibility for slippage or any other issues.

Update: Surgeon def wants to replace band with sleeve. He understood my honesty with moving away from my first doc, failing myself and not following up with support. Support is a KEY FACTOR! He feels that I will do even better with weight loss with the sleeve and maybe even reach that 100lb goal! I would love it. A huge development that will be a major factor in my success is my husband is going to do it as well. I will get done first, because of my "complication" - he has to follow the 6mth weight loss, insurance guidelines, etc. But he's got several health issues such as HBP, sleep Apnea, etc. so this will ultimately help him immensely and keep us doing it together! Now my goal is to try and eat smaller, better and with my eyes open for the next few months till we get all in order for sleeve surgery.

I am also dealing with a slipped band - and for the same reason. I was doing really well for the first year, I had only been sick once due to food getting "stuck". Then I had a train wreck of a week - almost binge eating and then throwing up and I have not been able to recover from that. My band has been completely defilled and I have to wait 8 weeks to have another upper GI done to see if the swelling has gone down and where the band is sitting. I am terrified to have the band removed, I loved where I was before I went into "self destruct" mode. I hope that the swelling goes down and I can slowly start to have the band filled again. I am now trying to deal with the emotional part of my eating and trying to make sure that I am doing everything I can to use the band as the tool it was meant to be.

Good Luck - I think support is key for all of us struggling with our eating.

How do you know your band has slipped?

It can be confirmed by your surgeon but there are many possible symptoms. Some people have all the symptoms, some of the symptoms or very few of the symptoms. Pain when eating, sudden ability to eat anything with no restriction, complete restriction where you can't even swallow your own spit, night coughing, acid reflux, are just some of the symptoms that come to mind off the top of my head. These symptoms can also be indicative of more minor problems like just eating too soon before bed, being too tight, or a dilated pouch. That's why it's always important to get your doc's input.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
