first upper gi and un-fill

Recommended Posts

I'm a horrible lap band patient in terms of yearly upper GIs and such.the band is a tool and I've had

my ups and downs and right now I'm at my lowest.

Tomorrow I have to get unfilled for my first upper gi in 4 years. Yes 4 years. I'm thinking of not getting filled back up again and just letting the band be.

Is anyone not filled at all?.when i first got the band my surgeon even said some people never get filled. I've been all the way up to 10cc and now I'm at 4. I want too continue to work out at cross fit and see if i can Control my eating like i can now.

Strange...typically surgeons don't unfill the band before a Upper GI, if they suspect a "problem" ...

If surgeons suspect an issue with the band, the band MUST be filled to determine if there is a problem.

But I guess in your case -- the surgeon is just unfilling the band to perform an Upper Gi?

If there is a problem then the surgeon will remove saline...or remove saline if you want it removed...

With my old 4cc band I've been unfilled several times...during 7 years...a few times I was empty --- and it was NO FUN....gained weight quickly.

I currently have the AP 10cc band and currently at 6.9cc and at my sweet spot...and hopefully to stay here for as long as I can.

But everyone is different, hopefully you can keep your weight down by rigorous exercise daily.

Good luck

Yep, my surgeon does the upper GI to determine if there is a problem that requires an unfill. If the band has slipped or something, I would be afraid that unfilling it before the upper GI would "mask" the problem.

Correct...surgeons cannot determined the status of the band if it is unfilled...they don't unfill the band BEFORE performing an Upper Gi...the band must be filled where they can get a snapshot of the position and pouch size...while the band is still filled...

Just had Fluoroscopy yesterday and they unfilled completely after taking the picture and determining my band (08) has slipped. I knew I something was wrong, gained 40lbs in 6 months and haven't seen a Dr. in YEARS...very bad patient here too :( ----- I am sad that I have to go under the knife for fixing my band, but as you said - its a tool that I took forgranted. Best of luck to you with Cross Fit and controlling your eating. food is my crack and I hate it. I ruined the part of the band that told the brain - food is yuck...

I had an upper GI swallow yesterday, and the band was not unfilled. I'm having an endoscopy tomorrow morning, and I don't believe he will be unfilling it then, either. I'll report back. Been having some unusual discomfort, so he wants to rule out anything band related.

Can someone explain to me just what this Upper GI actually is? I was filled a couple of weeks ago under floroscope ( 9cc's in an 11cc band) I don't feel any restriction so the doc says the my band is dialated. I asked for some kind of test to see just wast was wrong. The word I got back was that there was no need for a test. I was then asked if I wanted to replace the band or go to the sleeve. That means that I will have to undergo two more surgeries, one to remove the band and another to replace it or go to the sleeve. Needless to say I will think long and hard before making a decision. Right now I am seriously leaning toward living with the band I have. But, how will I know if there is really something wrong if I can't get a test to determing that. Feedback please.

Weird they didn't have u do an upper gi before the band. You swallow this bariam and is like an xray and they can see if u have acid or if u have the band they can see if it's slipped out if something else is wrong. They like to do Follow up to make sure it all looks good.

I literally just got back from my doctors office and had a complete unfill. I have to call to make an UGI appt. I was having a lot of mucus that was not allowing me to eat properly. I hear a lot of stories here and there, and I just have had to put faith in my doctor because everything he's said and done so far has been good. As much as I love getting feedback from others I have to just breathe and go with my surgeon's decision, especially when he hasnt given me any indications to question him.

Good luck!

Upper GI's are standard for gastric bypass but not for band from my understanding. I've never had one either.

I saw my dr yesterday and he said he likes to do an upper gi at the one year mark just to make sure everything looks good.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
