? about getting the stomach flu

Recommended Posts

I have 2 school age kids so usually once a year or so someone brings home a stomach bug. Some years I am lucky and don't get it, some years I do. But this year I have the band and my surgeon has put the fear of god in me that we must never throw up (for fear of slippage). Do docs rx you zofran or something to help stop vommitting if you do get a stomach bug? I am going in for a check in tomorrow and will ask but just curious what other docs do.

*My doc is 10 minutes from my house so getting to him regularly is not an issue.

I was told that I should have fill removed if I get stomach virus'. I think its best to not get stomach bug. Flu shot helps!

I've known several people who have slipped their band from throwing up and I too am a little wary of having any ailments that cause me to throw up excessively. I think having Fluid removed and getting some anti-nausea meds would be great precautions if you start getting sick.

As per my surgeon, if you have a stomach virus, and you are going to vomit, there is really no way to stop it from happening. In my experience, anti-nausea medications will not stay down if you have a stomach virus.

I did come down with such a virus after being exposed to my son and caring for my 2 young grandsons last Fall. I vomited several times (tmi), and the following day went in for a partial unfill. I stayed with a liquid diet for several days and had no residual ill effects from the episode.

It is best to avoid vomiting if you are able, but sometimes it is not possible. Lower your chances of contracting the virus by washing your hands often and keeping them away from your face.

This is scary news to me.

I teach first grade and can count on getting the stomach virus at least once a year. Ah!

I was talking about a stomach bug, norovirus or similar, I don't know of any benefit of the flu shot for a gastro bug.

I've had both food poisoning and a stomach flu since getting banded. Throwing up was unavoidable. I just did best to stay hydrated and check in with my doc. Thank goodness nothing wrong with my band

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
