New to this site. Getting Banded on 10/14

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am new to this site and was hoping to get some advice or what to expect for my upcoming surgery on October 14th. If anyone has info on the pre-op diet, I would really appriciate that!

Thanks

Hey!! You look relatively young! I'm 24 so its nice to see younger people on here :P I didn't have a pre-op diet because my surgeon doesn't believe it them haha so not too much info on that. Here is a rundown on my surgery expirience though!

I was banded on Sept 17th (5 days ago) and today I feel GREAT, just tired (see other posts haha)

I was on this site non stop the moment I got my surgery date. When they say everyone is different please believe it!

My surgery was a breeze, really. I was a mess with nerves but it all went smooth. I arrived at the hospital at 8:30 and was in surgery around 12:30. I woke up in recovery around 1:30-2:00 in pain due to gas but they still gave me pain meds and oxygen and I felt better. I was scheduled as outpatient but due to the pain meds they gave me they wanted to make sure I could get liquids down without vomiting so I ended up staying until 6:30PM.

5 days out I am fighting hunger A LOT being on liquids. At first I thought it might be "head hunger" which is a common term around here but I'm actually feeling hunger pains. I'm sipping Protein (By the way, Isopure mixed with crystal light is delicious!) and broths and it ususally goes away for a couple of hours but I can't wait to get some substance in my life! My post op is tomorrow and I'm hoping she adds a few things to the list. I'm feeling good about things but its different. I do notice I am feeling satisfied on either 1/2-1cup of liquids for a couple of hours at a time which is insane. My head has to catch up lol.

Good luck! The people on this forum are amazing! :)

Thanks so much for your info it's very helpful!! I just found this site, so i'm trying to read all the info I can before my surgery. My surgeon hasn't mentioned anything to me about the pre-op diet, so i'm not sure I will have to do it either, but I go next week, so I guess I will see. Thanks again for the info :)

Thanks for this -- so helpful for those of us pre-band. I'm glad you are doing so well and experiencing hunger, learning to respond to those signals, sorting out head hunger and real hunger, etc. I can't wait to get banded!

Hi Jakki, welcome! I have found this to be a great place for info -- have learned so much here compared to literature, etc. provided by hospital. My process seems to be moving along but I feel impatient -- so ready to get out of food jail and be on my way to weight loss and better health. I met with LB Coord. at the hosp. where I will be banded, did the psych eval and 1st mtg. with nutritionist. Waiting now for date with surgeon then hopefully it will all happen quickly! Best wishes to you.......

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
