Buy bottles of Water, and put them in the fridge, cool them, and add crystal lite, they taste as good and only has 5 calories. I have not drank soda in about 10 years.

Also quit drinking soda because it was bad on my skin, not necessarily because it is bad for lap banders.

Honestly I was addicted to diet coke before surgery, in my 11 days banded, I have not wanted pop/soda at all. Not to mention I can't have it for a while. However my surgeon did say I could have it eventually, it just might add to bloating and burping. Hope this helps .

I got a prescription from my doctor for Topamax which makes soda taste terrible and also helps with headaches. Took it for 2 weeks and it worked like a charm and I've never gone back.

I'm pretty sure its a mental addiction not physical. Lay it down say its bad for me and move on. My surgeon told me to stay away from it as it causes lots of gas and can cause band slippage.

day i started pre op, was the last time i had diet soda and beer

it was a matter of me deciding to do without in order to be able to have wls

the first 4 or 5 days, i had a headache but now 15 months post op, dont miss either and so will you..

I stopped drinking soda long before even considering WLS. But I think the suggestion of putting Crystal Lite in ice cold Water is a good idea.

I don't miss soda, but once in awhile, on a hot day, I would love an ice cold beer. But I won't do it.....too scared of what I hear about carbonation related complications.

I completely cut out the diet coke when I started my pre opt diet and while the lack of caffeine was hard for the first week or so, today I don't miss it at all. This is from someone who could drink 6 - 10 cans a day. And I know when I would get one from the store, something else always hopped into the bag at the register.

If you really struggle with cutting out soda you can always create a food aversion. For instance you could decide you can drink as much soda as you like but you have to stir in a tablespoon of salsa or salt and you can only drink it flat and at room temperature. But you can have iced tea and other non carbonated low cal drinks however you like.

Sometimes it's easier to make things unpleasant than it is to abandon them when we're trying to change our behaviors.

I don't have a soda addiction, but I did have a SERIOUS sugar addiction. But once I stopped it cold turkey, I just didn't want it anymore. I had one backslide of eating ice cream for my daughter's birthday party and after eating it I felt terrible (not guilt, but just yucky). You know that soda isn't good for your stomach. Focus on that. Water is so much healthier and it will purify your body. Isn't that why we are going on this journey? To keep our bodies as healthy as possible? It will take a little while to make water your new habit, but eventually your body will crave what it is given frequently.

I used to drink diet come almost every day. I stopped during pre op...cold turkey. I now drink crystal light and diet snapple. I will be honest, I still crave diet coke occasionally, but it's not worth it.

It can be done . I haven't had soda since may and I don't even do juice or diet juice . It's too sweet . I just drink tea or Water . I don't miss soda.

I had a coke addiction and was drinking a lot. I started by drinking sparkling mineral Water as a substitute, that way I still got the fizz sensation I liked so much and then slowly my big bottle of sparkling water on my desk changed to a big bottle of still water on my desk. I still drink soda occaisionally but it can give gas pains with the band and so I try to avoid it. I guess the only thing to watch is that you dont choose an alternative that is just as bad, eg juices, cordials etc. Try and break the habit with sparkling water, I even opt for this in a wine glass when out instead of champagne.

Honestly, you just have to do it. I was sooooo addicted to diet coke, and knew I had to stop. Back in January I just told myself no more, and that was that. It was really hard the first few days, because for so long that was the only thing I drank everyday. I haven't had it in 9 months, and I don't even crave it anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
