how's your fill done?

Recommended Posts

I know this has been asked before, but i have seen a lot of new post about fills and people going and it not going so well.

I have looked a many Youtube vids and see that it's pretty much the same.

This is what my doctor does:

1. weight and blood pressure

2. ask how's my hunger and eating

3. ask if i want a fill

4. lie on bed

5. places rolled pillow behind my back (this pushes the port forward for easy find)

6. draws .5cc in syringe (use to be 1cc, but im almost at max)

7. wipes area

8. feels for port

9. says, slight prick, and inserts needle into port

10. draws up current saline to make sure in port and puts in new fill.

11. pull back up to make sure in and put back in

12. remove needle and put bandaid

13. drink small glass of Water in one gulp.

14. if all is fine, i pay and leave.

My fills are pretty pain free, i only feel a slight prick and that's it. How does your differ from mine?

Mine are pretty much the same. I get lidocaine and then wait for it to get numb. I just lye flat on my back and arms behind my head and that is all, no pillow. Mine are also pain free.

Pretty much the same here.

A few more questions about eating mechanics making sure we are getting Protein etc. Fill is different for my husband and I as far as CC's I am a bit ahead of him. He's at 4.2 in 10cc and I am at 5.5 in 10cc.

I have had one missed port injection, but my port is not as close to the surface as my hubby's. It doesn't hurt slight pin prick and it's all done.

Oh it's nice to hear this -- I am pre-band and was adding this to my little list of jitters as I wait for a surgery date. Thank you! No need to bank anxiety over fills when I don't even have my band yet.

Mine is pretty much the same, too.

The only difference is that my port now sticks out all the time so it's impossible to miss lol.

Mine also checks the Fluid in the band too, to make sure there's no leaks. (it's just a precaution)

I've had fills as big as 2cc at the beginning and as small as .1cc. I'm actually going in today for my first fill in 9 months and suspect it'll only be .2cc or .3cc fill.

After discussing eating habits with NUT and then surgeon, if an adjustment is needed, they now have me stand on the Fluro Tilt table, locate the center of the port, then insert the needle while standing....

They've say they have found at my surgeons office, this causes LESS discomfort for some patients. I've never had any numbing medicine...hardly even feel the stick. Years ago, they used to have me lie down while inserting the needle. Didn't hurt at all for me that way either.

They then remove the Fluid, check for any discoloration, amount, etc. Then have me drink a little bit of barium contrast.....through a straw....and adjust as needed while watching my restriction level.

Don't fear this... if done properly, it should be pretty much pain free. I remember my first fill. I was scared to death... but after, i was like...Really that's it.

Just my opinion, but i really thing the pillow helps so much. i have had fill done with out it and ... Not so good and it hurt.

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
