Mistake?

I go tomorrow to be banded and now I'm absolutely terrified. I expect to be sore but not completely miserable... Yikes.

Everyone responds differently. Just remember why you are doing it, and allow yourself the time to go through the healing and post-op diet. It's the worst part, but it's short in the big scheme of things.

Lauren, don't be terrified of what another experiences. We are all different. If you feel that this is the right thing for you and you are 100% committed to the change and effort it requires of you then it will go well for you.

Try not to go into surgery with anyone else expectations, or experiences on your mind. Have confidence in your own decisions, and go from there. The first day is the roughest, remember to walk walk walk, sip slowly medicine cup sizes when you are able to have fluids and to treat yourself with some gentleness and love after. If you are tired rest. If you are gassy walk and well...fart. (trust me the first one feels awesome!)

Warm liquids like Decaf tea helped me so much, as well sugar free ice pops. For the site pain, an ice pack at the port site and a hot Water bottle for the gassy belly are a God send.

Pick up some Gas-Ex strips, and your going to be golden.

The strongest pain killer my husband and I took was 2 Tylenol. That's it, we were banded at the same time and we made it through, and so will you!

I'm not really in pain, I'm just unable to take in anything like full liquids without diarrhea and last night I had this horrid pain and burning. I felt like I made the biggest mistake if my life. I was prob emotional and irrational at that moment, I just really needed support. This is not easy

You wait. You accept that you are transitioning. Than you made a rationale decision after you've transitioned.

What you are experiencing is not 'the band'' date=' it's post op. Having surgery to remove the band will only further delay your recovery and not get anything accomplished (pain nor wl).

You have to get mentally tough for this next month. Not long after, you'll look back and shrug like it was no big deal. And one month will seem like nothing, compare to today when it seems like an eternity.

You put the work in, you got the surgery..give it time and start some positive thinking to counteract the negative emotions.

Thank you. I think lack of sleep emotions and frustrations made last night a million times worse than it probably was. I just want to start seeing the positive :-/

I'm sorry to say that I think your surgeon made a mistake in banding you in the first place if you were not 100% committed to it.

I can't imagine going so far as to have surgery only to want to go back in for surgery again. What does that solve?

It is only going to make you more uncomfortable' date=' and your poor body hasn't even had the chance to heal from the first surgery.

It's just unnecessary punishment and abuse of your already hurting body.

In my opinion maybe you should see the psychologist first before jumping into another surgery.[/quote']

I understand all of this, I appreciate it. I cannot blame anyone but myself for this decision. I took almost a year I decide and I do know this is probably the best decision for me. I just am not handling hunger and burping and heartburn well right now. I am a miserable sick person. I help people when sick, not be sick. I do realize I need to give this more time, I just wish I was better educated on the post op than I was. I expected this, just not this bad. It emotionally and physically weighs on you. Thank goodness I took 2 weeks off of work

You need the two weeks off to give yourself some time to heal. This was major surgery, and of course you are going to feel the effects of that.

The nausea and sick feelings will soon ebb. My hunger returned rather quickly after surgery as well, but I was more tired then hungry the first few days.

Once I was able to transition to mushy foods I was that much better as far as hunger and cravings went.

My husband wasn't so hungry, and he stuck to his shakes for a longer time as they made him feel more confident.

Set up a schedule, treat yourself like a newborn babe. Give yourself some nourishment every half an hour in small medicine cup doses. Try some warm Decaf tea, and some sugar free ice pops they help you get the fluids in and they soothe your insides as well. The warm liquid will help open up and relax the pouch and the ice pops help the swelling of the stoma.

Use an icepack at the port site, and a hot Water bottle under you shoulder/back or lower belly to help with gas pain. To move it and pass it...walk walk walk. Burping and farting are allowed! Find a guy and laugh it up with them as you toot your horn! :)

Take your pain meds, and rest. If you are not feeling well and really can't get any liquids in, call the surgeon you don't want to dehydrate.

Feel better, and reach out when you need to there are many good people here that will be happy to offer support and encouragement.

want a positive....here is one...you just had a major surgery that will give you better health and a chance to live a longer life....(healthier than what you are now)...you wanted this surgery and now you have it..id tell you what my ole man told me on my pre op but i am afraid id start getting hate mail again LOL........allow your body to heal, rest, take your pain meds, take immodium ad.....this was major surgery, not a hair appt..........in 6 months time you will be on here telling you felt just like they are....right this very moment.....give it a chance....and the people that responded to your thread, care also......that is another positive for you.

it will get better.. it took me a week or more to feel better. I had lots of diarrhea too. it was crazy. but now im 3 and a half months out.. and im feeling great! hope you feel better soon.

STOP!! Don't second-guess yourself. You'll get through this. Just come on here and vent when you need to.... Most of us don't mind. We can help you by giving you pep-talk, even if its just for that moment. Feel better!

Thank you guys sooo much. I'm now ok the search for a non milk base Protein Shake because I am miserable on what the md have me on because of my milk intolerance... I can't wait til this full liquid is done. I know I will feel so much better. Just don't see the light yet :-/

I'm using Puritan's Pride Soy Protein and it's unflavored (and not very expensive either.)

BTW - you can get Boost which is 16 g Protein and it is lactose free and gluten free as well.

It is a very emotional experience to have bariatric surgery. We have a lifetime of emotional pain attached to our weight, and many of us are emotional eaters. You're experiencing severe discomfort right now due to the surgery and then on top of it you can't even EAT anything like you're probably used to being able to do when you're stressed! It's overwhelming! I have been banded for 2 years. I lost about 60 lbs and then gained about 15 back 5 months ago. I went in for my first fill in a few months last week, and this weekend I was feeling really upset and overwhelmed because I was stressed from work, tired, etc...I kept thinking "I'll just have (insert whatever food)" and then remembering - oops, I'm on liquids/squishies, can't have that...made me realize I have slipped back in to my old emotional eating patterns. You will be able to get through this! Rely on this board for support, as well as your surgeon's office and their staff. ((HUGS))

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
