Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my 2nd fill today. The first was a few weeks ago and really did nothing. Today however is a different story. I can't really take two sips of Water without feeling like it might come back up. I've been reading some posts that say its due to swelling. So I'm wondering if what I'm feeling is normal or if maybe the band is too full now?

Your band is too tight, the band will get tighter in a few more days. If the band gets tighter I'd go back to the doctor for a small defill. Keep monitoring for the next 24 hrs. If you're having issues with simple fluids you will have issues with solids this reaction to your new fill is not normal.

I guess I probably have to get through the weekend though. If it doesn't improve by Monday I will call and get it defilled.

As long as you can down fluids you should be fine till Monday. A fill will minimize the stoma and the immediate swelling makes it worse. Make sure you're downing cold fluids as cold is a good therapy for swelling. The swelling should improve by Sunday or Monday as long as you don't eat a lot of solid foods that can irritate the band area.

If you're still struggling with fluids or soupy meals on Monday you might want to have them take out a small amount of saline.

Well today things are better. I was able to eat about 1/4 a can of Soup and was satisfied without feeling like it would come back up.

It's been 2 1/2 years since I was banded and this is only my second fill ... It's hard to remember if this is how I felt after my band was put in or not.

Thanks for your answers!

Hi Jamie, a 1/4 can of soup? That is worrisome sounding, be careful having the band too tight will cause you injury, continue to monitor over a 72 hr period, but even if this is swelling this seems a bit extreme. If you don't see an improvement by the end of the day Monday I would personally request a minor 1/4 of a cc to .50 cc de-fill, this is what I would do if I were in your shoes, just based on the information my doctor's and nurses have given me. Call up the clinic on Monday and tell them what's been going on and ask them what they think you should do. Did you do a barium swallow during or after your fill?

Hi Jamie, try drinking almost frozen juice the cold will help reduce the swelling.

I did do a barium swallow, my doctor made my band really tight so I knew what too tight felt like and then loosened it and I didn't feel any restriction, so he filled it to where I am now, which felt ok until I got home.

Jayme, I have to respectfully disagree that your issue is extreme. If after tomorrow, when you eat solids and find they don't pass the stoma, and if you are following the small bite, big chew rule, then you should call and ask for advice. FYI-many of us would love to have been in your shoes after only 2 fills. Many of us took 6 or more fills to finally find this kind of restriction.

The hardest part now is changing your eating habits if you are like many of us. Learning to take small bites, eat slowly, chew my food to mush was the hardest thing for me to adjust to. If you don't learn this lesson, you will suffer many painful stuck episodes. If you conquer this issue, you stand a chance to lose many lbs in the future. Good luck.

I agree, 2 fills in 2 1/2 years is great and I'm very happy with it. The reason I finally went for my first fill a month ago was bc I started to gain. My eating habits are good and I still stick to all the rules, but started to gain so I thought it was time. My doctor is amazed that I went so long without one.

As of right now, I am able to drink Water with no problem and Soup too. I don't eat a lot at once and I'm completely satisfied. Tonight I'll try some soft foods and tomorrow if I think I'm ready some solids and go from there. But I don't think my band is too tight anymore, I just haven't been this tight before and yesterday was a different feeling then I have had before so I was concerned.

I feel my most restriction a week to 2weeks after a fill.

3rd week it subsides and my hunger returns with a vengeance.

Hopefully some day soon my restriction wont decide to abandon me! And will wanna stick arnd longer.

Sometimes i wonder if ive sprung a leak somewhere along the way! LMBO!!
