Had my gastroscopy....

Recommended Posts

Ok,lost my long post about the endo I had Saturday, the ulcer and the band placement....band is on esophagus,no pouch whatsoever.....have a prepiloric ulcer and biopsy have been done to see if I have H Pylori.....meantime Im on combination 2 antibiotics and nexium and the dr says maybe it will stop the abdominal and backache...:rolleyes wouldnt it be wonderful if it could be that easy?:clap2: Strange thing is that the dr didnt mention anything about erosion of the band but she did say my esophagus looks ok...no dilatation or scarring....Annd I must say,the hot feeling in esophagus and reflux have been really all but gone the past 2 months after I stopped the Nexium for a few weeks....

I am not going to remove the band even though I was advised that now would be a good time to do so......I need to lose 3okg and I need this band to help me do that......pouch or no pouch....it stops me from overeating anyway......so I am going to battle the fat until I win and then I will see how things are going.....:nervous

If I had a different plan for losing weight or if I wasnt to scared of other surgeries I would have removed the band but I dont have a plan and what with eating and stressing this week(also band is completely unfilled..) I have gained nearly 8 pounds and I cannot live with that....dont want to,dont plan to....:help:

So that is me with all my complaints this year....going for it for another year....hopefully to lose all the weight and be happy and healthy with no aches and pains in this band...(well, let no one say I am not optimistic...:clap2: .....)

Hope everyone elses problems can also be dealt with....

Huh? Wait, hold on, I must have missed it this weekend. You had an endo and a gastroscopy? Your band is around your esophogus, not your stomach? I'm sorry, please fill me in!!!!

Hi

I went to theatre on Saturday.I was scoped and they took some biopsies of different parts in my stomach.....

The outcome is not different than before (the fluro showed 10 months ago that the band was "proximally displaced" that means the same thing than it is not on the stomach.......the dr spesifically said she sees no pouch at all.......nothing......so the way the band works (or dont) for me is it just makes the entrance for food smaller and forces me to eat somewhat slower however,if I eat to much I get severe pain on my sides (both sides of my ribcage)

When the band is empty I do feel it but really not at all like when it is filled some...(I physically feel the band around my insides...always have...always have to remove bra in afternoon ect ect..).and I can eat and drink anything and get some abdominal pain that the dr now says is the ulcer.......When I came out of theatre the aneasthetist came to me and said if he was me he would get the hospital to remove the band for free.....I asked him if they cannot just place it where it belongs and he said that in his opinion I already have to many adhesions around my stomach....whatever that might be......(I have a huge amount of scar tissues around my port that my dr also says does not happen to often)

So,that is me with a band with no pouch (the European surgeon that did the operation said he makes a "micropouch" but the gastro-enterologist says no pouch),a prepiloric ulcer that might be the cause of all my pain (have been complaining for a year now and the dr's just point blankly ignored my complaints...) and optimism that I can still lose 30kg's this way.....

Hmmmmm for some reason this seems odd to me. Did your band Dr. say it is okay to keep your band in even if its not in the right place? Is there no possiable effects from this? Cant they go back in a place the band in the correct area? Sorry for all the questions... Maybe I am miss undestanding the whole thing.

Hi

Not that odd at all.....if you google lower esophageal junction and lap band there is a lot of sites that speak about placing the band higher to create a smaller pouch of about 130ml.Fixing the band that way (with the extra stitching and the pars flacid way..) actually all but eliminates slipping of the band.....erosion is also a lot less according to the dr's.....in a lot of European countries (0r more spesifically with European band doctors) the band is definetly fixed differently than in the US.

I havent seen the band dr yet, will see him on Wednesday....but he and the surgeon that did the operation knows exactly where the band is and they have known about it for a full year...they never even suggested removing it for any medical reason.

The only thing that the gastro-enterologist said that might be different was that sometimes with a ulcer the pain reseptors gets very sensitive because of the long term inflammation in the stomach and that might have caused me to feel the band, get pain in my abdomen and in my back...

I dont know if this can be but I am on the antibiotics and still have get bad pain in my abdomen.....

As for just placing the band in the right area.I am selfpay and the dr didnt even want to fix his mess for free (10 days after the operation)I refuse to pay him any more money for this band.Anyway,I have spend at least another 3000 dollars this year with fills unfills, xrays, endo ect....

I just cannot justify spending this all the time.Call me a cheapscate it you want but there is more important things in life than this....Its not that I dont have the money, but I have to be responsible in the way I spend what the Lord gives me.

I want to be able to keep this band.....have it "pumped up" as much as possible and lose the last 30kg's as fast as possible and then remove the band......

As I havent lost any weight in the past 6 months I know that I can diet and work harder at this and that is what I am trying to do now.I eat less with the band so it does help me when I have enough fill in it.....

desertmom, I'm so sorry to hear about this happening to you. I understand your wanting to keep the band to lose the weight you need, but please don't jeaporidize your health for it. I'm concerned about the placement of the band in your body.

I hope you get answers to your abdomenal pain. Is it high or low etc?

Wow. do you have any malpractice resources out there? I'm not big on law suits, but if a doctor did something wrong and refused to fix it at his expense, I'd be all over that.

I'm sorry you are in so much pain, and I hope that things work out for the best!

Hi

No,no malpractice anything here......the dr.flies in from Europe does some operations and then goes home.....and the problem is they dont even admit that something is wrong. He told me before that he was happy with the placement of the band.....

Anyhow, things will work out.Somehow they always do....I am just frustrated that I am not losing weight and still have all these issues....I started on a 1200 calorie a day eating plan and will stay on it for as long as possible and see what happens.......

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
