Questions to ask??

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!! I've been on the forum daily and have learned so much, like what sliming is and what restriction means. I go to the seminar on the 21st and I would like to have a list of questions to ask, but there is so many things I don't know to ask. There is so much information on this site, but it is a little overwhelming.

Please send me some of the questions you asked or things you wish you would have asked. I want to be an informed patient and be able to go to my PCP fully informed.

Thank you!!

I have to be honest, most of what I've learned I learned here and it was only after I had the band - that's when the questions really start. The procedure itself is pretty simple and not really much to ask about at that point. Just be sure to ask how long you need to wait before getting your surgical scars wet, when is a good time to treat your scars (mederma...I only need it on my port scar) and when you can start doing abdominal exercises. Those are questions each surgeon will have a different answer to, everything else should be discussed in the seminar.

I would ask a lot:

How many Lap Band surgeries has the surgeon performed?

What brand gastric band does he use and what size?

Will you stay overnight in the hospital?

What is his follow up schedule?

Does he have an afterhours number in case of emergencies?

How often does he do fills?

Will you need a pre op diet and if so, what one and for how long?

What does the post op diet consist of?

Also... ask what happens after you lose your weight. What is the long term checkup/in strategy they recommend.

Thanks ladies!! I am putting all these questions on a document so I can take them with me on my seminar. I'm sure nerves will be high and I don't want to forget anything. If there are anymore questions I should ask, let me know.

I'm in the same boat but I go for my consult tomorrow. Wanted to know the things I might not even know to ask. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
