New band; diet concerns

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to this forum but have read almost every post! Everyone is so helpful with advise and experience. I'm hoping you guys can give me some direction and encouragement. I am 12 days post op and this morning I had a scrambled egg and 1/2 a piece of whole wheat toast!!!! Is that ok??? I am freaking out that the band isn't going to work for me because I am able to eat things I shouldn't!!! I'm already 17 lbs down, but every day eating becomes easier! I don't want to fail, but it's really hard not to try new things when I've had no problems at all. I don't get a fill until October 9th. I would appreciate any thoughts, advise or chastising that anyone has to offer! :-)

Did your Dr. say it was ok? His/Hers is the only opinion that matters.

As for eating things I shouldn't the BAND WILL NOT KEEP YOU FROM EATING STUPID. It is a tool that will help you, not a warden that will force you.

Are you in the mushy stage? eggs were on my mushy list so you did ok with that. I would avoid the toast right now. Eat an extra egg if you're hungry. You will be in "bandster hell" until you get the right fill amount. You will most likely be able to everything so be very careful not to fall back into bad habits. At this point it's just another diet. Yes, that stinks, but before you know it you will be in the green zone and then it won't feel like a diet. Good luck!

Yes Terry, I am feeling quite STUPID this morning! Lol! Unfortunately, I am fat, therefore, I think like a fat person. I am in the mushie stage and I know that the band is not a warden. I just expected eating to feel different, and it doesn't. It feels the same as before I was banded. I think I expected that I wouldn't WANT to eat, as I have heard from several people that I know who have been banded that the desire to eat was much less after banding. Not so for me so far. I am going to mark the toast as a little backslide and get back on track. Thanks so much for the posts! :-)

Did your surgeon tell you that your band don't work until the fill process start? The first 6 weeks are for healing, not really for weight loss. Most people are still in the mushy stage at 12 days post op.

I would think most surgeons provide patients with a pamphlet with food progression and what to eat.

Also, once you start getting fills and restriction, your band STILL WILL NOT keep you from eating junk and things you shouldn't.

Researching a weight loss surgery prior is crucial to see if it will work for YOU. Many people get the bypass because it makes them sick to eat too many carbs, the band does not make you sick, UNLESS it is dangerously too tight and that does not work long term without complications.

Some people get therapy to help them stay on track with the band.

I think terry was meaning nothing will help you if you are eating stupid... Not that you are stupid. I think it's a common misconception that everyone come out of surgery and is suddenly not hungry. Me= not hungry my friend=hungry... Our bodies are all so different and will act different. Don't go testing foods "because I can" or your likely to end up back in the same boat. Until you get a fill you need to work hard at eating things the doctor suggested. I'm only speaking from my own experience. Btw my friend and I had same doc only a month apart and we are same starting weight and currently same weight (she's a bit lighter) she really struggled with being hungry all the time. I didn't struggle until I ended up having my gallbladder out :/ I hope you find the strength to make this work for you... It's not easy but I have faith in you... (We all have trouble with our fat ppl brains XP )

You misread my quote (or I wasn't clear enough), I was not calling you stupid, I was calling what you did stupid. The band will not keep us from stupid eating. We will always have to wrestle with that. We will always have to test the limits. I have been banded for 8 months now, and I KNEW that there was no way that I could eat waffles early in the morning, no mater how slow I went, no matter how much butter and Syrup I used. But I tried anyhow. Spent some time feeding the sewage system and moved on. :D

You are in an extremely delicate and hard time, you aren't physically healed, and you aren't mentally fixed yet, you can do real damage. Hang in there, we have all been where you are and lived.

The differences between people is interesting how the band effects them because for me I am getting full to the point I have to stop eating even with my small recommended amounts and I have no Fluid in my band. I am also 10 days post op and am not getting hungry until about 3-4hrs after I eat. I was dying on liquids because I was so hungry but now that I moved to soft foods I feel much more satisfied but I assume the more I heal the hungrier ill get??

I'm also about 2 weeks post op. My Breakfast today was 1 scrambled egg with a bit of shredded 2% cheese, 1/4 diced avocado and a dab of salsa (didn't eat the chunky bits). I would skip the toast for now but I'd think the egg would be ok.

When I was on mushies I allowed myself to eat crackers here and there. Like 1 cheez-it at a time and I mashed them to dust before I swallowed. It's okay we all make mistakes (or we wouldn't be here) and if the toast went down okay, make note and move on, but follow your doctor's recommendations!! That is the only way you will be able to have a long and happy banded life!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
