Drinking fluids and meals

Why is it that we are not supposed to drink 30 mins prior to eating, during, or 30 mins after eating?

I know this one..lol. Before so you don't fill yourself up with liquid. During as it can help your food through. If you add Water to food it changes consistency. Goes through easily.. After because if your full it puts pressure on food working its way down and clears your stomach faster. You get hungry again more quickly.. Hope that helps

You will see that different bandsters have different guidelines. For instance, some are allowed to drink up until eating time but not during or 30 even 45 mins after eating.

In addition to what Zingy shared, you have to also understand that your new pouch can only hold about 1c of food. Despite being a slider (or not), Water will compound the total volume being held in the upper stomach "pouch". You risk dilatation or stretching the pouch if this is done consistently.

Additionally, as you fill your pouch during eating, the vagus nerve is compressed. This nerve is responsible for sending the message to the brain that you are full and this will result in being satisfied on less food. If you eat too fast (easy to do w/ sliders) or if you wash the food in the pouch too quickly you may not achieve that stimuli needed and will still hungry.

It's a hard thing to master. 4 years out and I still have to consciencely think about waiting. Today was the first time I told a waitress no drink please..strange feeling lol.

It really depends on your surgeon. More often lately, doctors are changing their rules on liquids because they now know food passes through band in less than a minute. It doesn't actually sit in the pouch, in fact it shouldn't and if it does you're at higher risk for erosion, so there isn't anything to "wash through" the band as originally thought.

Some will allow drinking normally before and after with little sips between bites while eating. Some are still very strict and insist on no liquids.

When it doubt, just follow your doctor's instructions.

Good info guys, thanks! Zingy, I did notice that I could eat more when I drank during my meals. So, I am definately sticking to no drinking during the meal. It does put a damper on having a glass of wine with dinner. But I guess we shouldn't be drinking alcohol anyway. I am trying to be really good this time and get all the rules down. Any veterans know of any good basic breakdown of lapband do's and don'ts literature that I can brush up on? Thanks!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
