Saving money on food?

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming most have saved money on food since you're eating less - but how much would you say that you save? Have you spent more money elsewhere in it's place?

I want to get on a more strict financial plan so I'm a bit curious :]

Honestly, I spend more money on food. I may eat less but healthy food is far more expensive than cheap food. It cost a lot less to snack on a Little Debbie than an apple and Peanut Butter. Cheap fatty ground beef is a lot cheaper than chicken breast, too. Fresh veggies and fruit add quite a bit to the food bill, too.

I was going to say the same as Mis. I spend more money on food than I did before. A grass fed, organic melt-in-your-mouth sirloin steak is going to cost more than a KFC meal, and if I can only eat a little bit, I want the food to be great quality and great tasting. So I don't actually think I've saved money on food at all.

I spend so much less on food that it's ridiculous. I went from probably $1,000 a month to maybe $400..and that doesn't even include saving on ordering take out....which I don't do anymore 'cause it's mostly fast food.

I don't spend a whole lot on clothes because I'm buying cheap right now since I'm still losing weight but last week I bought two Coach pocketbooks and a wallet. I rationalized it by saying I'm saving so much on my food bill. ....and Coach products really wear very well so it's a good investment.

I love your thinking! :P

When I do buy groceries, I tend to buy more expensive items than before like grass-fed filet mignon. But I go out with coworkers for lunch everyday and I usually eat the 2nd half of my lunch for dinner...so I'm sure I must be saving money, I've just never done the accounting.

I was going to say the same exact thing. My new healthier lifestyle is more expensive than my 5 bucks a day lunches at McD's I used to eat but that being said it's WELL WORTH the investment. You owe it to yourself to eat well, regardless of the price. Cut corners elsewhere if you can =)

My grocery bill is higher. Healthy is more expensive for sure. However saving a fortune on not eating out. I don't allow my other half to eat out either. He was use to fast food 2 meals a day. Not no more. I made a great dinner tonight and he loved it. It was our first meal together since my surgery.

Right now it's lower, but eventually, like the ladies mentioned above, I'm sure it would even itself out, as I start adding foods. Right now I'm kind of stuck eating the same things over and over again (I don't mind- for now) that grass-fed organic steak sounds goooooood to me. (Haven't had steak yet)

The amazing thing I have found though is that good quality food actually tastes GREAT, makes you feel less heavy and bloated and though more expensive, it's only because the demand for good healthy, organic whole foods isn't there.

How, as a society, we have been conditioned to think that mass-produced MacDonald's chicken nuggets, which taste like cardboard to me now, is worthy of any sort of craving, is beyond me. Give me a miso-marinated slab of beautiful codfish anyday....yummmmmm.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
