pampi 36 Posted September 5, 2013 Just on the point of psych evals' date=' most doctors in Australia don't require you to do them. Nor attend information classes, or see a nutritionist, do a supervised diet or anything in order to qualify for the band. These are not pre-requisites for success with the band, as I obviously am testament to. I also didn't get a pre-operative report when I left hospital both times, with two different surgeons, and my first surgeon had been banding for 15 years and my 2nd surgeon for almost 2 decades. I didn't know what band I had until my first visit to my doctor both times (when I asked about it) and I don't think I've been at all irresponsible.[/quote'] Im gonna call my doctor first thing in the morning get all the info I can on my band, now I understand that i didnt get all the info i needed I was so happy I honestly didnt ask but im new to all this and have no one else to ask or talk to about it thats why i came here because i saw how nice and informative everyone else is here i never expected this arguing and bickering all i want is someone to talk to when i have a question or concern ... Ive been overweight all my life and before my surgery i was already taking metformin for pre diabetes and hypertension ever since i got it i have been fine with no need for medication and loosing a lot of weight so im very happy and wanna stay like this i truly dont need the stress these women are giving me
pampi 36 Posted September 5, 2013 Most insurance require them in the US' date=' they want to make sure the patient is full aware of what they are getting into and responsible, I guess they want to make sure they are getting a bang for their buck... Surgeons don't care, they will gladly take anyone's money that are self pay, psych exams are not required with most self pays in the US. Most surgeons in the USA don't tell the patient what band they have until AFTER the surgery, but usually the patient WILL KNOW in the hospital or during their first post op appointment. My point to this poster was SHE SHOULD have gotten a post operative report BEFORE she left Mexico, many others do that have surgery in Mexico. I've known a few people that had surgery in Mexico with reputable surgeons, and got their post operative report BEFORE leaving Mexico and they had a US surgeon lined up for their aftercare, THERE IS a BIG DIFFERENCE IN BEING RESPONSIBLE AND NOT RESPONSIBLE.[/quote'] But if i was or if i wasnt why are you making it such a big deal? Please look at yourself you are just arguing for the sake of it. This doesnt affect you at all its my surgery, my body, my life and money common lady your taking this waaay out of proportion
lellow 1,713 Posted September 5, 2013 Most insurance require them in the US, they want to make sure the patient is full aware of what they are getting into and responsible, I guess they want to make sure they are getting a bang for their buck... Surgeons don't care, they will gladly take anyone's money that are self pay, psych exams are not required with most self pays in the US. Actually my surgery and the surgery of most Australian wls patients with private health insurance is covered by their insurance without jumping through all the hoops. I automatically qualified at a BMI of over 35 with a family history of diabetes. Spoke to my surgeon for the first time on 4 July, banded on 1 August, hit my goal weight 22 March the year after. Most Australian insurers don't believe a patient has to 'prove' that they're worthy of getting wls. Insurers in Australia are as much in it to make money as any insurer in the US, but unlike US insurers they're not looking for excuses not to give the patient what they need. They recognise that wls will save them money in the long run by preventing obesity-related diseases, and that it therefore is a worthwhile investment. There is no proof that having to do a psych evaluation, multiple information classes, seeing a nutritionist or having to do a supervised diet will mean more success for the patient. I'd like to see independent studies that support that assertion if US insurers are saying that's true. In fact, anecdotally, I find that the Australian banders I've spoken to are often MORE informed about lapbanding including the lifestyle choices they have to make, and what it will mean for them in the long run, and I suspect that has more to do with not spending so much time having to fight their insurance companies and having access to subsidised socialised medicine which means cheap access to aftercare.
