So am I stuck or what?!

Recommended Posts

Ok guys I'm trying to figure out what's going on with me. I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post op and was doing great over the weekend. I was told I could eat lettuce so I made a salad for dinner using shredded ice burg lettuce yesterday. I felt uncomfortable all night and continued to feel the same way this morning. It feels like really, really bad heartburn and really hurts to take a deep breath. I'm able to drink and eat although it hurts going down but it's staying down and not coming back up. I'm so uncomfortable at the moment I'm thinking I might need to stick with liquids until this passes. Is this what everyone refers to being 'stuck'?? Could I have just have irritated something??

I was still on mushy foods 3 1/2 weeks out but each surgeon is different. Even still lettuce is hard for some people and maybe it's something that won't work for you. If you are that uncomfortable already I would give a call in!! Good luck.

Not sure what phase you are in..please elaborate.

I'm surprised to hear that lettuce is on your to eat list. I know tons of people who get stuck on lettuce/salads consistently and it's a common no-no food. Maybe it was just the choice of food to start w/ and this perhaps is a no-no food for you.

Can't tell you what's going on without knowing what else you eat.

It does sound like there was irritation. I agree, stick w/ fluids until the symptoms pass and try again..but with something different lol

Lettuce is tricky, but I don't think you're stuck. Some foods you simply can no longer tolerate and you might have just discovered one of them. You could also still be gassy from your surgery, I know I had a bit of trapped gas at that point.

I would still give your doctor a call. If you do have something stuck or lingering around there causing a partial blockage you want to know and clear it if it can be.

You may need to be on liquids for a bit to rest the area again. In week 3 and 4 we were told to eat mushy and then soft foods. I am 4 months out now and I have no trouble eating salads, though I do cut up the chunks of salad even if they are precut and shredded lettuce can be a bit stringy and that tends to get hung up in the stoma.

Best of luck to you, hope you're feeling better soon!

I would call your surgeon's office ASAP. I had similar symptoms, and was diagnosed with gastritis. It was very painful.

I had to use carafate for an entire month afterward, but it did help the pain resolve.

Please don't neglect yourself, as it could lead to additional complications down the road.

I hope you feel better fast.

I've been on soft foods for a week and half and have tolerated everything pretty well. I did have a hernia repair and my surgeon took me off the Prilosec but I've also noticed a little reflux at times. I'm still hurting so I think I'll call just to be safe. Thanks!!

My stuck feeling usually ends with spitting up whatevers stuck. Its starts off slimmy then the food comes out with a little gagging. I think they call it productive burb ("PB"). It feels likes a heavy pressure in your chest & even Water hurts going down. I get stuck with eggs & bread, eaten seperate occasions. Hope this helps. Fyi, I stopped eating lettuce bc it hurts my tummy.

It is always recommended that you call your Dr. if it persists... I cannot do lettuce .. I sometimes can eat a little romaine.. but lettuce is not my friend.. really it doesn't have much nutritional value and definately doesn't have Protein so I use my calories for better things.... I used to eat lots of salads and apparently it didn't make me lose any weight..lol . so, I would drink some Protein Drinks or liquids til the irritation gets better...

I am almost four years out from surgery, and still have trouble with lettuce. Ice berg lettuce is tough. If you haven't spoken to your surgeon's office yet, please do call them.

I had the hernia too, but lettuce is not a problem. I eat small amounts of all kinds of lettuce with no problem so far. almost 7 months out. Some people I know just do not tolerate lettuce at all so maybe you will be one of those. I would say liquids until this is over.

I wasn't allowed lettuce until I was about 12 weeks post op. After the two weeks of post op liquids, groups of foods were added back slowly. I don't have an issue with any type of lettuce, but I chew it to a pulp, and it can be gassy.

I'm with all above who said to call your doctor. When you have pain, that should always be your FIRST call.

Feel better......

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
