PPIs and acid-blockers .. Do you take them?

Recommended Posts

I've seen online where some docs recommend them to protect the stomach, regardless of whether or not you have reflux. Did any of your surgeons recommend them, or do you take them? Just wondering...

I'm taking Prilosec. My surgeon said it helps reduce stomach swelling right after surgery. So it's only for 30 days, then I'm finished with it.

Yes, I take Nexium twice a day, which had to be increased in dose post band surgery. I had a long and extensive history with reflux prior to band surgery, and the band has only increased the necessity to stay on the medications.

@ Sojourner - did you have a hiatal hernia too? I have been on Nexium for a very long time, but I have a hiatal hernia and my doctor said that having the repair should fix that.

Ditto - same here.

Interesting. I never had indigestion or Reflux before surgery, even though I had a hiatal hernia (never knew I had one!) which was repaired during surgery. My stomach now is greatly irritated by any amount of alcohol (thankfully I rarely imbibe!), and I find myself popping a tums more and more often, even while avoiding irritants.

I guess my question was whether the band itself causes more acid in your tummy and whether we should all be taking acid blockers. It will be a question I ask the doc on my next visit in November! Thank you for the replies, and any other input would be welcome! :-)

I had a hiatal hernia as well, but never had any symptoms. I'm 4 weeks out from surgery today. So I'm interested to see if I develop reflux now. I sure hope not. If I was a fatty without reflux, I surely don't want it post band!

This is my third day post op with no nexium and I am thrilled, I hope repairing the hiatal hernia has resolved my reflux issues and I pray that it stays that way!

My surgeon recommended them to me, but I haven't need them, never suffered pre surgery and haven't yet needed them post surgery

In preparation for the lap band, I had an endoscopy which showed that I have the beginning stages of Barretts Esophagus. I probably should have known something was up because I have a long history of heartburn. Now I take a 20mg Omeprazole (Prilosec) every morning and have no problems with it at all. It didn't affect my decision to get the band, and the doc said to go ahead with the procedure.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
