Lap Band removal surgery scheduled!

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have a surgery date of September 16th at 1:30pm for removing my Lap Band!

I never thought this would come to be!

I've had my Lap Band since July of 2010 and have had considerable discomfort the whole time it's been in. Many and varied tests could not show the cause or reason for the discomfort and my old surgeon finally told me to not "bother to come back". After 2 years of receiving treatment from alternative medicine healers --- and getting some relief, enough to continue working full time --- I decided to try western medicine again and found a doctor with a good reputation and who is well respected by his peers, not too far from where I live.

I am finally in good hands with a very experienced and intelligent surgeon who specializes in weight loss surgery.

My diet after I recover from the surgery itself will be focused on adequate Protein, very low carbs, and gluten free.

I'll report back how the surgery goes!!

Hiddn,

So sorry the band was not a success for you. Sadder that your original doctor could not find any resolution either. For inexplicable reasons, there are a minor few whose bodies do not adapt well to the band. It's an old problem shared with those who get hip/knee replacements, donor organs, aortic filters, screws/bolts name it. So unfair. I hope that this surgery brings you relief. Keep us posted.

Wishing you well, and hopefully all your pains will go away after removal, it's good that you do have that choice, this was one of the main reasons I chose the band was if something goes wrong, I can get it removed, with other weight loss surgeries, they don't have that luxury.

Good luck.

What were your symptoms? I've been having a lot of problems with my stomach since October and all my surgeon suggests is to get the sleeve. I quite frankly do not want to have another wls I just want relief from the pain and discomfort I have been in.

If your surgeon is not trying to get to the bottom of your issues, you may need to search for a new one. I had to do the same thing, many surgeons now are pushing lap banders to Sleeves, because they don't want to deal with lap band problems or aftercare.

If you don't feel comfortable with revising to the Sleeve, don;t do it, the Sleeve has its own set of issues, among severe reflux that you may never get rid of, and your surgeon will not have to deal with any of your issues any longer, after you revise to the Sleeve.

I urge you to get a second opinion and search for lap band friendly surgeon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
