Newbie question on post fill diet

Recommended Posts

Hi All -

I received my first fill on 8/23, banded on 7/26. I received 4 ccs. I've been doing great, have lost about 20 lbs since surgery and I have had (thankfully) no issues to dates. From what I gather on here my surgeon is a bit conservative. I followed my post op diet to the letter. I got through all stages great and introduced solid foods without issue. Now, after my 1st fill I did 3 days of Clear liquids, 1 week of thick liquids and now I am on mushies. Tomorrow I will start a week of soft foods. Then onto reintroducing "regular" foods again. Admittedly I've had some foods that were not in my allowed stage. I'm back on track. My question is - is the reason for the slow introduction of liquids to solids to ensure swelling is going down and that you can tolerate what's being introduced after each fill? I know every doctor and every patient is different. I'm worried that maybe I did damage to my band or my pouch. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

This is my post fill diet...eat regular diet but be extra careful. It is very obvious all doctors have different opinions on what is best. I highly doubt you did any damage considering my doctor has no restrictions and I haven't had any problems and my band looks great.

My doc asks me to do liquids the first day and then mushies the next. After that, solid food is fine. Your doctor seems to be overly cautious but he may know something about your situation that no one here would know, so follow his guidelines.

I doubt you've done any damage. Some docs allow solids immediately.

Thank you so much for replying. I'm working hard on following the instructions I've been given. Glad to hear that you haven't had any problems!!

Thanks 2muchfun. This is the diet that all his patients follow post fill (there is a copy of these instructions that is given to each patient scheduling a fill) but you are right - my doctor knows best. I'm going to continue doing the right thing now!

This is great for those of us who are pre-band -- lots of info on stages to expect plus you are such an inspiration. Congratulations! Keep us posted on how it is going for you! I can't wait to get banded -- ready to do the work and find peace with food and success on the scale. Here's to good health!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
